Military service is a vocation
There was no such thing as a typical day in the flying world, from training, operations, humanitarian to teaching or extra duties.
Continuous improvement centric business, where learning never stopped whether formal or not.
A well practiced military management system honed over 100 years.
Time away on ops was hard on self and family, especially when on combat ops.
The enjoyable time were many and various, beyond listing.

RAF Worldwide
I wanted to serve in the RAF and this was my dream job when I joined from school at 18.
Learned a lot about real life as all my colleagues were from various backgrounds.
It also enabled me to see first hand why a country needs to defend itself against undesirables.
Never regretted serving and still miss the comrade-ship.

For any young person with or without qualifications, the RAF is a great option. Any branch of the military will provide you with job security and satisfaction and with the RAF, you have the ability to continue with your education and regular promotions.

The Best
There is no better training for a young person and joining this culture was the making of me. I travelled the world and learnt many things, I joined a s a mechanic and left as an Engineer.

Lifestyle Not Job
The Pay in certain trades is excellent but the promotion/advancement throughout the organisation is based on who you know and not what you know. Many of the managers/supervisors/Team leaders I dealt with had little or no people skills and would either micro-manage to the extreme of give you no guidance what so ever.
It really is a lifestyle not just a job.

Not until I left did Inrealise that this establishment is amazing. It’s one massive team which looks out for each other to the hilt.

All depends on the management
As the Royal Air Force is effectively a government company this means it is not profit driven or needs to be.
The workplace can be fantastic however this will depend on the management, it has potential to be a very desirable job or one where you hate.
I absolutely loved my first 6 years, a had fantastic management that took the "rough with the smooth" they gave out perks as well as sometimes having to give cons. However this has to be expected in the military.
although my recent management are just pushing for more and more production at the cost of moral, when this doesn't need to be done (non profit organisation).
Overall I rate this job high, and I think it's great for any young / single people to join whilst i do not recommend any one who has a family.
ProsDepending on management; Early Friday finish, cheap accommodation, family like feel.
ConsMOD terrible contracts on camps that fleece the soldiers, sailors and airmen for money eg. shop prices are absolutely shocking.

Fast paced and enjoyable
When in the UK work is very much 9 till 5 unless on shift work, deployed over seas the tempo increases and you have to react to situations as they arise. The hardest part of the job was leaving family and friends when you had to deploy. Work life balance is not bad and you get plenty of time to carry out adventure training and sport activities.

Testing and constantly changing
I learned something new every day with things constantly changing around me with different work personnel. My hand skills were always being tested and I was constantly looking to prevent any problems occurring. Hardest part of the job was constantly being away from home with the possibility of being sent away at any point for long periods of time.

Low pay for responsibilities
Working at a level where civilian Service counterparts are earning up to 40% higher salary for the same responsibilities. The area as a Civil Servant attracts few people due to the low salary against local cost of living.

If you want to get out and see the world, get experience in fields not open to the average person, and make friends and memories that will last a lifetime, give HM forces a go.

Good to use for life experience
If you join up use it as an opportunity to gain as many free or heavily subsidised qualifications as possible and then leave. The management are usually not qualified or even competent at their job and will expect you to do it for them then do nothing but criticise you.

A wise choice for a career minded individual
Life in the Royal Air Force was many and varied a typical day being 0800-1700 when at home and anything else when detached. Great scope for travel and education You were on call 24hs a day and also paid 24hrs a day. If single there was free food and cheap, good accommodation. There was a great comradery throughout. The hardest part of it all was the separation from your family but that was countered by the travel. All in all a great vocation for the brave and ambitious individual.

Exciting & challenging
When based in the UK I worked as a floor manager and training coordinator in a typically administrative role - maintaining rosters, liaison with internal & external agencies on a number of projects, flight planning, organising and participating in continuation training. When working overseas the job was much more high pressure as there was always a time/safety constraint that needed factoring in.
In my 12 years of employment within the military I have worked with a variety of personnel from all around the UK, all with a variety of backgrounds. On the whole I would describe personnel in the Royal Air Force as keen, professional and strong-willed.
The hardest part of my job was maintaining the work/life balance.
The most enjoyable part of the job would have to be the opportunities for adventurous training and the feeling of camaraderie that comes from being part of the Armed Forces.
