Excellent Company To Work For...
I love my current role in River Island, there is no such thing as a 'typical day' as everyday is different in retail Management from sickness to holiday cover, the lead up to christmas is my absolute favourite due the speed that is required to meet all demands and reach respected targets and personal goals. I've learned so much about the management side of the business from KPI performance to staff which I will take with me to whichever position I pursue next. Retail offers a wide variation of co-workers all with their own thing, from bubbly personalities to great craftsmanship and hard labour. The hardest part of the job would have to be, staff headcount and lack of hours authorised to use, as previously mentioned, my favourite and most enjoyable part of the job is the christmas period as I excel in fast paced environments and hard hitting deadlines.
All in all, it is a great place to work.
ProsDiscounts on certain items.
ConsBad pay and no benefits.

Productive and Valued
I have worked at River Island for 3 years as a part time sales assistant. For the majority of the 3 years I have worked there I have thoroughly enjoyed my shifts, the management are always there to support you and give you feedback and advice. The tasks are often initiative based which I really enjoy as you can take your creativity and customer service to the level you'd like. The hours aren't the best for a part time assistant, including mostly night shifts running to 10pm and also unsociable hours including evenings and weekends, however this is the nature of a retail position and the managers and other staff members are always more than happy to discuss these working patterns with you as an employee and work around your current lifestyle which is greatly appreciated as an employee.
ProsCustomer service experience, no day is the same, free uniform allowance, staff discount on all products across all departments.
ConsUnsociable hours, Long hours, Weekends and evening work.

Overall it was okay. Not judging anyone. Learned a lot from the pros and especially a lot from the cons. Through it’s ups and downs a lot of skills were developed and I’m greatful.

A great experience if you love fashion
Working with River Island was a great experience because I have a passion for fashion and I got to learn new things, the staffs was very helpful and welcoming. the hardest part of the job was on the Christmas holiday, trying to make things go to plan, trying to satisfy the customers, controlling the fitting rooms, Etc. The management was very good. The most enjoyable part of the job was getting the job done and getting paid at the end of the month.

Great place to work, not much to do
I worked as a Christmas temp. The shifts where mostly 4 or 5 hours. The longest day I had was Boxing Day where I worked 8 hours but was paid double. Pay was £7.55 per hour for 18 - 20 year olds. It was good overall there just wasn’t much to do. I was asked if I wanted to go home early a couple of times because there were too many of us and not enough work for us to do. I would recommend it. The pay is good and the work isn’t hard at all.
ProsPay above minimum wage
ConsCan be boring sometimes

Good discount everything else poor
There isn’t much progression within the company the hours are terrible as in they can’t Enhance hours but will employed new people 2 hour shifts are a joke good staff discount and some nice people to work with. People are expected to do jobs which management should carry out but are not paid the same

Excellent company
River Island gave me opportunity when I needed it and I went on to be a successful store manager. I wouldn't have left if the store hadn't closed.
The overall culture of the company is very good, they listen to their managers and make changes to make the job better and more productive. The wages for staff are above national living wage and there are opportunities for progression if you want them.
Area managers are supportive and fair.
ProsDiscount, uniform allowance, career progression
ConsCan be a bit samey if you are in a small storw

Fun and friendly workplace
River Island is a lovely place to work for it is perfect for people who are self motivated and driven to complete tasks at a fast pace. The friendships you are able to build alongside your work are desirable and long lasting.
However retail is an underrated and unappreciated job in which some people do not always respect or validate the hard work that goes on.
Although the company do take care of their staff with gift, prizes and other incentives to keep the best and most motivated work ethic amongst staff.

Poor company to work for
Had very long hours at the start of the contract 25 - 39 hours per week and do not get paid overtime for working the extra hours. Just standard pay.
Would change hours from 16 to 12 without notice or put the wrong shifts down and then be questioned as to why I did not turn up for work.
Was owed money from extra hours work and did not get it for 3 months.
Was very ill during a period of work for nearly 3 weeks and could not ring in sick everyday at 5.30am to say I would not be in. Was given disciplinary action for this.
Asked to leave due to a back injury and could not complete some tasks that they set for me to do, even though I had explained the situation.
Pros30% discount. Only full price items only and not on offer. Uniform allowence
ConsNot organised, released shifts last minute, No flexibility in shifts unless a very good reason, Have to wear river island clothing only and MUST be the latest stock. Cannot be last season

productive and fun workplace
A typical day at River Island i would start early each morning to bring in the daily delivery and process it as quickly as possible so it could go out to the shop floor. I think the operations staff are great and essential to the company. Unfortunately there is very limited chances to move up into management which is quite frustrating.
ProsGreat staff
ConsNot enough full time positions

wasn't there that long
I was taken on for the Christmas and told there could be a position at the end. No one got a position. It wasn't hard to work there, management was ok.
