AWFUL PLACE TO WORK
It was a brand new store we walked into and for over a week we were doing 12 hour shifts almost everyday with JUST 30mins break a day, people were being sacked over trivial matters by the area manager who thinks he is some sort of GOD and is actively rude to peoples faces. After opening most peoples hours were cut down to 4 unless you were the favorites and we have not been paid properly. TERRIBLE COMPANY TO WORK FOR and the products we sell are not much better and other shops are cheaper! STAY AWAY
ProsFinishing a shift
ConsShort if any breaks, rude management, unsafe warehouse, issues with pay

Well here do you start
The day to day running of the company is a shamble expected to work 50+ hours per week and end up not being paid for them. senior management treat you like a piece of dirt on their shoe. Would not recommend to anyone
ProsWorking with good staff in store
ConsLucky if you get a break, treated unfairly, the list is endless

Worst management ever
Simply put area 8 has no management at all. Those who are in charge of area 8 stores are just utterly incompetant. The managers do not know when their staff are working despite being responsible for the rotas and are then surprised at who they have put in and on what shift. Management themselves are quite simply bullies. They get off on threatening their staff for issues that they themselves are responsible for. Don't put staff in, work won't get done. Don't pay staff correctly, they won't work as hard. simple things that seem to not click with managers. Customer service is another point of issue. Managers have no customer service skills whatsoever. A customer can't find a particular item and is not sure of the proper name for said item, lets laugh at them as the store manager when they get to the tills. Not the first time this manager has been described as rude by customers either and it has happened at the previous stores he has worked at as well. Communication with staff is yet another lack of management skill. Instead of describing what you want staff to do in person lets write a list and let then read it so there is no human interaction at all. Turnover for the store is higher than it has every been as well. More staff have left due to the poor management now than have previously. Usually staff have left for other jobs or uni, now they're leaving because of simply management. There is also no care taken during coronavirus by management either. We have rece

Easy job
The job itself is easy if you are a sales assistant, however if you are a manager it is best to avoid this company. If you are a manager you are expected to run stores of a size that is similar to a small supermarket with 2 staff if you are lucky. There is no direction from head office or any field management, they all have different ideas and you end up wasting time and payroll undoing stuff that one area manager wanted where another area manager or someone higher will want it changed. The company has a track record of not paying staff especially managers all the wages they are owed, the only way to get all your money is to take it up with ACAS.

Nothing more than a stepping stone
A typical day would be working 4 hours on a till being on my own at busy work times. Ive learned new skills within my time there management, key retail skills like cashing up, locking up, team building and till work. The management before last year were amazing it was like a family, we looked after each other and got the job done as a team. Now the new management are selfish and only care about money and themselves. It no longer feels like a fun work environment as there is no team work its all about number 1 and you struggle to get motivated. The co workers are really friendly and we have to try our best to motivate each other and get the job done. The hardest part of the job is having a unrealistic list to complete when you only have a short amount of time to complete. And the most enjoyable part of the job is seeing co workers.

This role broadened my commercial experience, giving me an insight into stockmanagement and general retail sales.
Poundstretchers has a constantly changing range of products, which in itself creates challenges for customer service. It is a fast paced retail environment which was enjoyable.
ProsBeing able to help people evry shift.

Thriving environment which challenges and rewards productivity.
The start of a typical day at poundstretcher would commence with a daily handover to ensure that the running of the operation is as smooth as possible. A morning briefing would also take place to motivate staff and give opportunities to inform staff of all the updates and requirements for the days business. The management structure relied on communication and effective leadership to inspire and achieve the highest work productivity. The co workers were friendly and worked effectively as part of a team and could be relied upon to work independently or as a team. The most challenging aspect of the job was keeping the transport costs down by ensuring all outgoing vehicles were at full capacity. With this i learned to be organised and identify problems before they arose. The most rewarding part of the job was self satisfaction at working to the best of my ability and having outlets that were satisfied with the deliveries they received in excellent condition.
