Great flexibility in scheduling, pay so-so, fast pace, terrible above a store level
I've worked at this store for about two years. I enjoy the fast pace environment and feel a sense of accomplishment when I finish a days work. My manager is one of the best bosses I've ever had. She takes care of her employees as much as she can and defends us from upper management (the bad ones). Above a store level, every person I have dealt with (except for one) has unreasonable expectations, favoritism in promotion, and don't want to pay their workers a reasonable pay. My awesome manager had seen my hard work ethic and my results and wanted me to be promoted to the co-manager position within the first year that worked there. I had been hired as a supervisor (non-keyholder) and the next step was assistant manager. I had gone through her interview and passed but my DM at the time turned me down because "I can't just skip levels like that". Which makes no sense because they went with an outside hire who had never worked at this company before and I was overqualified for the position to begin with. I have been offered and begged to take higher positions, and I would be willing but now they won't compensate a reasonable amount in pay for the extra responsibilities and loss in flexible scheduling. Overall a decent job, but high turn over rate at every store is due to not great pay and understaffing constantly.
Pros20% discount, super flexible schedule, great store managers, good pto, job security.
ConsUnreasonable expectations from corporate, favoritism above store level, pay (not good but better than some places)

in the beginning it was fun and the moral was good but as time went on everything changed.
When I started at Ollies it was just being built so the work was hard but fun. We had to unload trucks, ticket merchandise and move it to the floor nd stock shelves. Ollie's is old school.

The current general manager is terrible to work for. Do not waist your time with the job. I hear the pay is a joke these days.
The general manager that opened the store was the real deal! Great to work for easy going but Stern when he needed to be, just all around a great guy. The only reason I’m not working there today is because he slipped up and was forced into early retirement on a “technicality” that the assistant general manager was all to Willing to report. Given the assistant gms track record and constant negativity my loyalty followed my real general manager out the door.

The prices and customer service
This is a new location and position for many there. We have learned a lot from each other and working with our customers. The company will continue to get better if we stick to our goals.

Average Job
The job that was described to me with the rate of pay was not what finally happened. Promised promotion with raise which never materialized. Asked to do too many tasks without compensation.

Great to work for
I start working as a Sales Associate and moved to Guest Service Supervisor. I was supervisor over the front end. I scheduled breaks, counted cash drawers, kept front end clean. I only left because I started schooling and found a job closer to school.

It's a great store. Great prices
It's a great store to work for. I worked for Ollie's for 2 and a half years and loved every day. I would go back but I live in another state now and the Ollie's is an hour away from me. Not including morning or evening traffic drive home in Houston, Texas.
ProsI had a great manager
ConsShipping sucked

Questions And Answers about Ollie's Bargain Outlet

If you were in charge, what would you do to make Ollie's Bargain Outlet a better place to work?
Asked Aug 21, 2018
Don't Force the cashiers to feel like they have to be sketchy in trying to convince customers to sign up for the Ollie's card, also don't count how many customers sign up as the employees rate.
Answered Nov 8, 2021
I would read through this entire post and try to my best ability solve these issues that my employees are having, so each store could run more efficiently.

Full of lies them people dont care about you at all
Answered Oct 21, 2020
I applied with a paper application (a while ago). I was taken back to meet the store manager at the time, not the friendliest of fellows. I was told to come back the next day. My interview took place at a patio table on the sales floor because "the back office was a mess". This is while there were other customers in the store, walking around. I answered a few questions and was hired. No drug test. They did do a background check. Overall, very easy application process. I started off at just above minimum wage. Within a year I was bumped up to the next tier of cashier and my hourly wage bumped up to the next even dollar amount ($9 at the time). I now work with a completely different set of managers. (The level of professionalism, or lack thereof, seems to be about the same.) Their criteria for new hires the past couple of years seems to be "They're breathing and they passed a background check". The most recent bunch seems to be ok, but we've had some real head scratchers in the past couple of years. (The one guy that couldn't figure out how decimal points worked on a calculator, the sweet older lady who kept getting lost- either taking reshops back or just lost on what button to push on the register and calling for assistance every five minutes, to the alcoholic who wouldn't stop drinking for his shifts and couldn't figure out how to log back on to his register- something we do multiple times an hour becuase the register application will automatically log you out after so long due to inactivity outside of a transaction.)

What is the work environment and culture like at Ollie's Bargain Outlet?
Asked Jul 22, 2016
Can be stressful. They cut hours to much. Not enough employees and take to long to hire new people.
Answered Mar 7, 2020
It is stressful. Half the time they're short staffed and you're left to deal with customers complaining because you're the only cashier there. Call for help and most of the time nobody shows up.
Answered Apr 30, 2019
Do sales associate on work on the cashier or do they work in the back too ?
Asked Nov 18, 2016
Working there you do it all. You run register, answer phones when on register, unload trucks, price merchandise, and put product on the shelf. You also recover the store and they expect that to be done with three people working, which that leaves one person recovering the store, one person getting trash and cleaning restrooms and carpet departmen too while third employee runs register and then helps manager count down at close. Sometimes you do it all in the same shift and they wonder why things are not done.
Answered Mar 7, 2020
Sales associate work the register and the back just depends on the store needs at the time
