Productive and fun work place
Enjoyed working at HBC for the past 5 years. Learnt lots of technologies involved in ecommerce platforms. It was a great team to work with and the manager was very understanding everyone's situations and concerns and helping them to feel valued in the team.

Demeaning culture.
The hardest part of the job was dealing with management literally yelling at people. It was a very blame oriented company. The parent company was selling off companies and the industry is changing fast.

This company is a great place to work for.
Their environment revolves around supporting each other and the company.
They have a great management staff.
Hudson’s Bay was ok to work for because you got a chance to work remotely and spend more time with your family. It was also a place where you could advance.

Lack of growth and opportunities. Not a lot of promotions.
Very easy and fun environment. Not stressful and hours are not long.

Horrendous place to work
Poor senior leadership and upper management. Lots of waste, due to poor project planning at the senior level. Every day is filled with chaos because internal resources are limited and enterprise projects are not well-planned, let alone executed with any process controls.
Our data center is closing in 2017, and it's not a surprise for any of us who are still here. Many of us were looking for other jobs before the facility closure was announced. Some staff bolted as soon as they heard the news. Those of us who have been here for a year or more were offered a reasonable severance and retention bonus; so, I'm staying until my end date. I know I will have a job offer before my end date because the market is so hot....
ProsFlexible work schedule, work from home allowed once a week
ConsEvery project is filled with chaos, due to poor planning
The managers pushed me to do waaaay more because I was a younger employee. They never praised me for getting everything done, and extra instead they'd ignore me. THEY NEVER ANSWER THE PHONE. So if you're taking the day off you may as well just go in and tell them, cause they don't know what a phone is. Management is ridiculous!
I coordinate the efforts of the inventory team to identify and solve inventory issues during the production shift. I enjoy the challenge of problem solving. I have learned how to think outside the box to solve difficult issues. I enjoy my co-workers and immediate supervision.
The most difficult part of the job is staff retention and cross training through out the different job types.
ProsEnjoyable work and co-workers
ConsLow staff and untrustworthy HR department.

Just my experience....
I learned a lot while I worked at HBC (12 years Canadian head office) and I’m grateful for that but the last few years were extremely stressful.
The stress I experienced was due to a lack of a cohesive vision and direction on how best to achieve objectives and the ultimate goal. Very poor senior management - no empathy, no cultural sensitively, awareness and sincere desire to understand the Canadian market. Extreme lack of collaboration internally, especially the last three years of my tenure.
Not a lot of opportunities for growth. What I thought were opportunities at the time were just projects or tasks that no one else wanted to do and I did not receive compensation for the extra responsibilities.
As a POC, I experienced several situations that were uncomfortable as it pertained to race. I did not receive any support from my manager when these things occurred - often in front of my manager, so they did witness these micro aggressions and sometime overtly racist comments.
While I worked at HBC there were no POC at the executive senior level for over ten years. In 2015, there was one POC who was an executive but they were let go (among others) within 10 months.
My Canadian colleagues were great for the most part but I did not experience the same warmth and belonging with my US colleagues.
All in all I have no regrets and appreciate everything I learned but I would be hesitant to recommend HBC as a great place to work solely based on the work cu
ProsIconic company, with a lot of brand recognition.
It was a good learning experience to work in the department store for personal growth. There is no customer service, no team work, often abusive customers, selling credit cards is the most valuable part of the job we did for the company. No room for advancement or growth.
Busy, fast paste environment but a pleasant place to work.
have pride in working for the company that has a big history in Canada
has a casual dress code
Seasonal employee.
If you love people, being a seasonal employee proved very enjoyable. Hectic pace.
Training for the seasonal position is left to the regular staff so you have to be a quick learner.
ConsShort shifts.

Loved working for a key staple in Canadian retail
Salary is below average and the culture may change depending on which group you are part of however I had a very good opportunity at HBC. Took on different roles and developed professionally quickly.

Questions And Answers about Hudson's Bay Company
What advice would you give the CEO of Hudson's Bay Company about how to improve it?

The company is already on a shaky foundation, stop with all the mergers and layoffs! About two years ago the company began outsourcing their customer service to the Philippines. This, of course, set off alarms to the U.S. based employees. Everyone was in fear of losing their job. The management kept any and all information to themselves, doing their absolute best not to cause panic. This included telling everyone their job was secure and there was no cause for concern. Time went by, more mergers took place, then more outsourcing occurred. This time customer service jobs were outsourced to El Salvador. Again, red flags were flying and the alarm bells were ringing. And again we were told we had complete job security. Then, much to our surprise, there was a surprise layoff a few months ago. There was no warning, no word from upper management, no remorse, no nothing. So my piece of advice is to invest in your employees. Keep the jobs in the U.S. Stop buying companies. Improve and strengthen your own company, restore it to the retail giant it used to be before you lose it completely. At its current rate, it’s only a matter of time before the company goes under.
