Receptionist/Administrative Assistant |

Never taught us anything for the outside world, only had Microsoft 2000 so no use to anyone away from IRD
First 2yrs I loved as I was the receptionist taking and making calls from all over the world, meeting Customers and getting them to the right place at the right time organising meals for those that were in all day meetings ect.
I learnt how to make the customers happy and content, management very seldom spoke to us they snapped. My co-workers were just great we all got along and helped each other out when needed. The hardest part of the job was trying to make management happy. Tje most enjoyable part of the job was the thanks we got from customers who came and thanked us for making their stay enjoyable and easy.

Average day in a call centre
A typical day at work would be ensuring I am early for my shift as everything is very strictly time managed. After setting up my work space i start to take calls and assist customers with their queries.
I have a great manager who provides me with the support i need. We set goals together to ensure i continue to strive and grow in the work place.
I get along with the majority of my co-workers and often socialise out side of work time with them.
The hardest part of my job is the verbal abuse i am faced with day to day. But i remember it is not personal, and i am there to serve the customer, assist them their frustrations and help them resolve their issues as easily as possible.
The most enjoyable part of my job is helping people have a great understanding of the system and seeing them finally grasp the concept of taxes and how they work.

very hard complicated work poorly paid badly managed
you will be required to carry out complex calculations on tax accounts. Apply procedures follow guidance that change almost daily to benefit accounts. Fill in sheets send off referrals and process work sheets all this while answering phone calls. Nobody rings HMRC who doesn't have a problem, nearly every call is hostile. Your answering call after call with almost no breaks. HMRC does not consider you as call centre staff or itself as a call centre so does not adhere to call centre practices. HMRC front line staff have not had a wage rise above 1% for 8 years and another 3 year pay freeze is imminent. Wage is just above NMW. Moral is rock bottom and mental health issues are the highest they have ever been. Management are piling on the pressure to take more calls and clear more work from multiple work streams. Your constantly told to continually improve and it feels like your forever training and never allowed to consolidate what you have learned. A jack of all trades master of none. Unable to park onsite if you live within 1.5 miles of the site.
Prosnothing to mention

A good place to work.
It is my responsibility to review and reconcile customer's tax records, issue over and under payments and write to tax payers to explain their reconciliations. To do this I had to undertake three weeks training in which I studied a varied overview of personal tax.
My job requires me to be thorough and confident in my knowledge of personal tax. As a government department we must work through the work management items that take priority on any particular week, this means that our work changes frequently requiring a flexible disposition. This also means that I am constantly learning new aspects of personal tax and also learning more thoroughly how to work the items on the computer systems. As assistant Officer I report to a line manager and attend nightly team meetings to discuss the team's overall productivity.

Flexible working
Dealing with high value debt. Managing accounts, accessing many systems to obtain information to make an informed choice. I have learned an extensive knowledge in all tax aspects. I understand reasons behind change due to management, I can approach management confidently with any questions I may have. HMRC values, diversity and equality courses attended. Hardest part of the job was travelling in winter time. I am a very conscientious worker and if I was unable to get to work due to travel I had consideration for my colleagues working with 1 less employee. Enjoyable part of the job social working, flexible working and my work colleagues.

loved working here
when i started at the inland revenue 10yrs ago i had no experience at all, i had worked in the contact centre for a few yrs and gained knowledge using computers and customer service experience , I then moved on to the debt management dept and insolvency .my duty's were to sort high volumes of post , trace national insurance numbers and update the data base. I was offered redundancy with 16 others as our jobs where going digital . It was a job i enjoyed getting up for .I worked with a variety of people and got along with everyone .there was a variety of jobs in the department so i never got bored.

Secure career with prospects
Overall a secure employment with many promotional prospects within HMRC and opportunities to move within other civil service departments like DWP, Justice dept. etc The workload I had after induction was telephony but then a small amount of case working.
The hours of employment were onylaid out 2 weeks into induction which I found disappointing because at that time, I found them awkward and would probably have stayed where I was had I known earlier. Notification of a position came some 5 months after interview situation.
Prosdiscounted travel to work where applicable, flexi hours build.
Consmany decision changes involving workloads at short notice moving from telephony and casework
