Overall Reviews at H&R Block
3.0
Flexible work hours.
I have worked in three different offices for this company, I was an office manager for one season. I found the support from the District General Manager, less than desirable (he always accused the subordinates of wrongdoing but took no responsibility.) While working as a receptionist and tax preparer, I found the local office managers very supportive and involved.
The work atmosphere in any H&R Block office I have been in is horrible: tax preparers aggressively compete against each other for clients, usually leading to conflicts and even fights among the office team members. Usually the oldest tax preparers, or those who are seniors/enrolled agents, take all the business and clients, leaving no choice to new or younger employees. So, some people make a good income while others stay there for a season or two. The office managers know about this situation but they are not supported by the higher management, who wants just profit and to reach each district's monetary goal that was designed by the HQ. The main interest of the company is to make profit for shareholders, not to help employees get an equal pay.
ProsFlexible schedule
ConsThey can cut your pay to nothing, the number of hours every employee gets can be manipulated by the office or district manager, no contract to mention a certain number of hours or certain weekly pay

Productive and fun workplace, good office culture.
Good place to work and great office culture, there are times where the expectations set are unrealistic, but overall my experience is positive due to helpful management and co-workers.

Low pay, they get upset if you work a lot of hours
I worked as a seasonal receptionist. There were two other people hired besides me, but one didn't show up half the time, and the other didn't like running the front desk.
My manager would have me come in to work a double shift, and the district manager got upset that I worked that many hours. Their goal is to make money, not spend it.
ProsNone
ConsLow pay, lack of hours

Productive and customer oriented
I enjoy working here for part time seasonal duties. You spend a few months studying for the Tax Pro test and then the season starts at the beginning of the year. Starts slow and by February it is very fast paced until the end of March when the season is really slowing down.

Too much upper management pressure to produce.
Working at the front desk, your best wasn't ever good enough for upper management. It was unnecessary pressure from upper management. Even the Tax Pros were pressured to perform and increase productivity with previous and new clientele.

Good to gain experience
It's a good place to work to gain experience. I worked a lot of hours there. We started out with 5 CSP's,but after a few weeks I was the only one left, so I got all the hours and work load. I was also the Office Marketing Ambassador.I was in charge of the weekly marketing calendar and expected to get at least 5 leads a week, do good neighboring with other businesses, & set up side walk tables with marketing materials.Minimal pay.

Horrible Management
The management is horrible. Communication is not good and they don’t stick to what is being said during trainings. The employees are not trustworthy and from what the managers say the owners doesn’t want to hear any complaints about the business. Don’t expect a commission because it is almost impossible to achieve the percent needed to get it.
ProsIt is a job
ConsYou are on ur own for the Most part

I worked as a receptionist this past tax season. I learned so much about taxes, I had a great seasonal experience and definitely looking forward to continuing to work with H&R Block in the future.
ProsTeam leader is amazing. Great work culture, everyone's helpful and friendly. Learn a lot about taxes.
ConsSeasonal. The pay. No benefits.
