Overall Reviews at Graphic Packaging
3.0
The company has a pretty big food service customer base. So their is a lot of variety, depending on what department you get assigned to.
If I had to describe this organization today, it would be that of a need for a more work/life balance. Too much overtime since September 2019. A person cannot make any real plans when it comes to family events. The management only works 40 hours a week so they are not the ones making the family time sacrifice. The pay is considered the best in Marion Ohio itself.
ProsClose to home.
Cons12 hour shift 60 hours a week.

Poor management
Poor management. Work/ home life not balanced. Coworkers stab you in the back. Pay and benefits are ok but doesn't necessarily make up for the poor management and lack of brotherhood from coworkers.
ProsGood benefits
ConsWork life balance

No time off
You will not get time off like they tell you. You get scheduled for overtime like crazy. Management micro manages and makes new rules on the fly without knowing how to do your job. They do not care for employees as people they treat you like a numbered machine.
ProsLeave for lunch
ConsShort breaks, poor management, overtime

Great people but struggled with management.
I enjoyed working at Graphic Packaging since 2007, when they bought out Smurfit Stone. Recent management changes in May 2019 led to confusion over expectations and workload distribution.

stressful, bad work life balance
stressful, bad work life balance--very high expectations with low accountability with peers....lots of double standards across the divisions. Often criticized for obstacles out of your control

Unreasonable
Management very emotional, knee-jerk reactions. HR not supportive, inconsistent. Crew consisted of Union workers, management hostile toward them.
Typical day- arrive to work to find the supervisor before me, still on duty, told people on shift to ask me to solve their problems / answer questions. This would start me off behind.
Performed annual Culture surveys. It got worse every year.
Hardest part of the job was the lack of support I received from HR and upper management.
Safety was talked about a lot, but usually things didn't get fixed until someone got hurt.
Very old machines, company corporate refused to invest in plant.
Enjoyable - I learned a lot from the people running machines inn various departments and cultivated positive relationships as I learned.
ProsA few good people on staff.
ConsZero support, guidance rare.

Hectic
Constantly changing requirements for production as well as assignments for supervisors. Extra tasks added often with little or unclear instruction. Upper management tends to give more credence to hourly associates rather than their own lower management supervisors. Upper management rarely follows through; they are just as stressed. Plenty of challenges.
ProsThey made good on what they said in my exit interview.
ConsRequirements for audits, meetings and projects with no time allotted to complete them, .Supervisors in different departments are treated very differently.

management change was not beneficial
Upon hiring at GPI the atmosphere was very conducive to work and advancement. After and almost complete turnover of up and middle management the atmosphere changed as well as all lean philosophies died out.
Prosdecent pay
Consteriible family life
