A typical prison
Very poor working conditions, a typical Florida state prison. Very little room for growth and promotions when I was employed there and I would think it remains the same at the present time.

Public Health Nurse | Tallahassee, FL | Jan 2, 2020
I enjoyed education nurses on infection control & TB; medical & psy audits quarterly
I love and enjoyed the interaction I had with the different nurses and staff and the multiple institutions. I got great enjoyment out of teaching them about how to handle TB cases and Outbreaks. I would also ask them for input on how we could improve or shorten the paperwork or policy and stay with required guidelines. If they had any suggestions submit for review
ProsThe interaction with others and letting them know you care!
ConsWhen a facility had a great deal of non compliance or dings!:(

Stressfull
Working in a stressful environment not helped by the incompetence and lack of backup from upper management. Working long hours without support. Struggling to get the correct components needed to maintain the daily operation of the security system and with little to no funding.

ProsLunch is $1.00, Boot shine $1.00 Haircut $3.00 Carwash $5.00
ConsStreneous work. Hazardous environment at times.

Training Specialist | Olustee, FL | Sep 1, 2015
The Corrections Academy in Olustee, Florida was a pleasant and rewarding environment to end my eleven years with the Department of Corrections, prior
During my employment with the academy, I traveled to and from work and hour each way, each day. My main responsibilities were to create instructional materials for approval from Florida Department of Law Enforcement. This also included development of test questions for the state correctional certification exam administered by FDLE. I love instructional design and development and I like teaching, as well. The hardest part of this position was the distance required to travel to and from work. However, it became an enjoyable time to think and formulate new ideas for the delivery of correctional training. I learned a lot about local employees and officers in the field. It was a totally different experience that being in central office in Tallahassee. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the competent and hard working trainers at the academy and training center.
Prospleasant environment, competent staff
Consdriving distance, distance from restaurants for lunch

Enjoy working with people and being a team player.
I enjoy working for the Florida Department of Corrections education inmates on how to live a productive life upon being release from prison. It is sometimes difficult seeing inmate return to prison. The ideal goal is when they succeed the department succeed.

Hated working there management disrespectful. Need more employees.
I return back to Florida Department of Corrections and after one year I remembered why I left. Manage don’t care about employees, leadership talk to employees worse than offenders. This job is production only, I think the State of Florida/ Department of Corrections especially the 4th Circuit was the worse company I ever worked for and the pay is even worse.
ProsYou have a Job
ConsYou can leave

Watch your back
I spoke out against management because they were not giving us the proper training as required by law. I also filed a grievance. I did not win that grievance, but several months later they suddenly started looking into my background. they actually found a rule violation and terminated me for it, but the majority of employees there are crooks and liars. I now completely understand why the prison system makes people worse.
ProsGood health benefits, some good training
ConsYou have to watch your back against inmates and officers alike, they do not like people speaking out against people doing the wrong thing, pay is low and raises are not guaranteed

Probation Officer | Orlando, FL | Nov 22, 2017
I enjoyed teamwork and positive attitude of my coworkers
I enjoyed the teamwork and positive attitude of my coworkers. I enjoyed the planning and coordination of the many different tasks. There was much sensitivity needed with dealing with the victims of crimes and I had to be strict with motivating the criminals to follow the rules and change their lives to become productive citizens. Half of my work was done in the office and the other half was suvaling the probationers and being a liaison with Law Enforcement and Court Officials. There was a lot of paying attention to detail and reporting any discrepancies. The best part of my job as with working with the victims who were very discouraged and hurt. I believe this is good training to help people that are sick and needing a kind and loving person to help them get thru the day.
ProsWorking with many different people and helping Victims was the largest Pro.
Conscriminals that would not stop committing crimes, searching thru cockroach infested probationers homes looking for contraband

Questions And Answers about Florida Department of Corrections

How often do raises occur at Florida Department of Corrections?
Asked Oct 2, 2016
12 yrs since a cost of living raise. Horrible
Answered Mar 23, 2020
I have been with FDOC for over 8 years and NEVER received a "cost-of-living adjustment". The only increase in pay was because they increased the pay across the board to attract new employees. You have to promote to get a pay increase.
Answered Feb 20, 2020
What is the most stressful part about working at Florida Department of Corrections?
Asked Feb 21, 2018
The "required" overtime and staff shortage
Answered May 2, 2021
Co-workers and management are much more stressful than any person on probation.
Answered Feb 22, 2020
How are the working hours at Florida Department of Corrections?
Asked Aug 23, 2016
Love the 12 hr shifts, every other weekend off.
Answered May 2, 2021
The hours can be very long in Probation. Management will tell you the job must get done, contacts must be done at 100%, files must be kept up, violations must be done. There is not a day when everything is caught up. Stressful.
Answered Feb 22, 2020
How would you describe the pace of work at Florida Department of Corrections?
Asked Nov 19, 2017
The work pace depends on the position you have, what is going on at the time, and what you make of it. If you have enough staff to perform all your job duties correctly it can be a steady pace with bursts of activity. If you don't want to, or can't, perform all your job duties correctly, it can be slow.
Answered Feb 20, 2020
Working for the Florida of Corrections is a great adventure. Lots of room for advancements. It can be used as a stepping stone to other careers also.

What question do they ask during poly graph ? Anything drug related and how did you respond did you tell the truth or lie
Asked May 2, 2017
No polygraph. If they had one, they would be even more short staffed. They are in such desperate need for help, they basically hire anyone.
Answered Oct 8, 2019
No poly for non-security
