Terrible working environment.
It was a very unprofessional atmosphere with favoritism. No team building training and pitting emplyees against one another. Not everyone was held accountable.
ProsUnemployment during summer break
ConsPay, no vacation, no sick leave, not being acknowledged, favoritism and no company outtings.

Best Kids in the Metro
These are the best kids in the metro. You can take small children to work with the Ride Along program. Great for Moms and Retired people. Work only when school is in session.

No longer here
Durham was a good bus company but they are no longer here. They were replaced by HM Dunn, and they aren't very apt to hire on full time employees. Therefore i don't recommend them.

Great place to learn transportation industry
- Love the company
- Love the leadership at our corporate office
- They truly believe in recognizing great performers
The hardest part of this job (as someone in recruiting) is pleasing everyone. Recruiting this technical of a position, while ensuring you are state and federal compliant, takes a lot of strategic planning from a recruiter's perspective. Additionally, one must have the support of the community behind them when recruiting for these positions. The more support you have, the easier it is to find talent.

Mantaining DOT standards and student discipline.
While acting as a consultant during the RFP proposal phase and contract negotiations, company management was very professional.
Due to the diversity of student transportation, everyday was eventful. I learned to exercise extreme tolerance and a sense of humor. Managed the recruiting, hiring, background checks and DOT certification. Responsible for all special projects and events. Office environment was a team oriented. I truly enjoyed interacting with the drivers to get feedback on any issues, concerns or accomplishments they were experiencing.
ProsDiversity of work.
ConsManagement conflicits.

Depends on the site
I work at The Colony yard, and I rather enjoy it. The local supervisor is firm but fair which often gets construed as being mean.
That said, you're working for a large company with a corporate management that runs from being overly involved to barely involved. The former safety bonus has been resurrected and will reinstated beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.
The health benefits are atrocious and there is no employer contribution. The vision (VSP) and dental (Met) are decent and relatively inexpensive.
And aside from your scheduled route, you're free to work as much or as little as you want.
Prosgood people, schedule flexibility
Conshealth benefits

This is a nice place to work
I have enjoyed the last couple of years with this company. It is a very rewarding job, I have had the privilege of watching the children on my bus to grow up.

Awful place to work at
Management is Awful he lies and plays favoritism. The training now is awful they aren’t getting trained right anymore . The pay / benefits are awful . Most of the drivers are back stabbers . If you get harassed at Durham upper management doesn’t help the employee . Buses breakdown all the time lately. Drivers are told to drive buses even if they are broken. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to work for this outfit .

Since old manager was fired it’s better
Old manager was fired yay and new management stepped up from dispatch and now the moral and business runs smoother.. There’s always going to be drivers who don’t get along in places like these but for the most part, the terrible drivers are gone.. except for a few. Bus companies everywhere need more drivers and its a good job if you have kids yourself because you take them on the bus. I did that for many years and mine are grown and I still drive buses but now not a school bus. I’m a full time transit bus driver where I get close to 40 hours every week and most of the time OT
The only con I have for my new place is its very physical work. I’m considering going back to driving a school bus but need FT consistent hours.
ProsTaking your own kids to work with you & Having the same days off as your kids ie: Summer
ConsNot enough consistency with hours. Charters can be good when they have them, but they aren’t consistent enough.
