Patient Access Manager | Philadelphia, PA | Jan 9, 2018
It was fun place to work
The Chop Feeding and Swallowing Clinic was a wonderful place to work: The staff treated everyone like family: For example, the Department Manager would host an annual end of Summer cookout at her home for all the staff and their families. It was a pleasure working in the 'Day Hospital Feeding Program' because it gave me the opportunity to get to know the patients and families from varies cultures and backgrounds. Many of our patients were recommend to the program due to a physical disability or behavioral disorder. However, when our patients achieve their Feeding goals and graduate from the program it made me smile.
ProsHelping assist families that were in need
ConsPay was too low

What i enjoyed most
At chop I applied to an office position, but got offered a cleaning position. I was told I could always move up in positions once I'm in. I enjoyed working individually on my work shifts. I didnt enjoy not moving up in a better position when I applied or did i enjoy the lack of days i was working. Overall a good hospital work experience for me.

good benefits, poor working conditions depending upon the department, HR very uninformed and poor in communications
Due to a cervical spine surgery with a long recovery I was to return to my job but due to the fact that i was out for 6mons- they terminated my job. HR did not return calls about my status. They advertised for positions with my job description but I was never even communicated why I could not get my job back. A typical day expect a lot of interesting but also things that were at the cutting edge of medicine. Every patient's medication a dosage had to be calculated to avoid any mis-dosages. Its a very stimulating environment as they are working at automation and also simplifying the work by using 5S and Lean technology. The senior management was very demanding and expected a lot from everybody. Co-workers were competitive but assisted others when possible. Hardest part of the job was continual change and poor communications. We had monthly continuing education where 2 credit hours were obtained from the association with a college that approved our CE for creditl It was enjoyable to be always learning and getting new information about drugs and dosages. Great location for being in a college environment with lots of chances for entertainment and great food.
Prosdispensing against the clock, demanding management, poor parking
Consgood location, close to many colleges, progressive atmosphere, and the best doctors in many areas.

Not for the weak
Being that it is a children's hospital, you come across all types of backgrounds and cultures. It can be emotional at times depending on where you are, so it can be stressful. You truly have to love working with people and have excellent customer service skills. Most days are busy and require organization skills. I feel that you learn a lot if you are willing to do the work that is required.
ProsGreat peers, informative classes, great location
