Example Interview Questions

In this article, we explore some common certified medical assistant interview questions and provide sample answers to help you prepare your responses.

How do you handle it when a Certified Medical Assistant calls in sick?

A good certified medical assistant understands how to handle situations effectively and doesn't leave their team in a bind when they're ill. In this interview question, the hiring manager wants to learn about your ability to think on your feet and your commitment to your team.

Example answer: "When a Certified Medical Assistant calls in sick, I do everything I can to cover for them. First, I ask another Certified Medical Assistant on the team to take on their duties. If no one else on the team is available to cover, I ask the employer if I can take over those duties. If that's not an option, I fill in as a Certified Medical Assistant."

How does a Certified Medical Assistant stay up-to-date on knowledge?

The interviewer is looking for an answer that shows how you continually learn new things and seek out new challenges. You can mention any on-the-job training courses you have completed or books and magazines you have read. It's also a good idea to mention any certifications you have earned (such as a CMA certification) and any professional organizations you belong to.

Example answer: "I am always looking to learn more about the latest medical advances, new products and software and new techniques. I am also interested in participating in professional organizations such as the CMA and volunteering at a hospital or other clinic."

What is the most challenging part of being a Certified Medical Assistant?

This question is designed to determine your understanding of the challenges that a Certified Medical Assistant will face in their career. Use your knowledge and experience to demonstrate that you understand and are ready to handle those challenges. You should also discuss what you do to manage challenges in a healthy way.

Example answer: "The most challenging part of being a Certified Medical Assistant is dealing with both doctor's orders and patient demands. Patient behaviors can be difficult to manage. The best way I've found to manage the demands of these two different types of people is to listen to the patient. It is important to understand the patient's needs because they are the top priority. As an assistant, you will also have a doctor's orders to consider. For example, I may have been told not to administer a certain medication for a patient because it could have bad side effects. My responsibility is to know what those bad side effects are and inform the patient about them. Then, I would determine whether the risks of this treatment outweigh the patient's benefits."

What is the most memorable experience you have had in your career as a medical assistant?

Your answer should be positive and highlight your ability to make an impact on the lives of others. A good response is unique and specific. Instead of vague statements, give a concrete example of how you helped someone. Make sure to be as positive as possible, even if it is a negative experience.

Example answer: "My most memorable experience was helping a patient who was suffering from severe depression. This patient had been through many treatments and doctors, but was still suffering. I conferred with the doctor because the patient refused medication. After months of working with this patient, she became less depressed. I was able to help her because I took the time to understand her feelings. This was a great experience for me because it gave me the opportunity to help a patient in a unique way."

What do you think are the three most important qualities for a medical assistant to possess?

A medical assistant relies heavily on their ability to maintain professionalism. It is critical to adapt quickly and remain focused when you are in this position. You need not only be a capable helper, but also an effective communicator and coordinator. While the question might seem simple, it is important to remember that you will most likely have to communicate these qualities when asked during the interview.

Example answer: "I believe the three most important qualities for a medical assistant are attention to detail, communication skills and adaptability. A medical assistant needs to be attentive to instructions when dealing with delicate equipment. They must also be able to communicate with patients and colleagues to manage symptoms and implement treatments. Finally, medical assistants must be flexible enough to work in a variety of situations."
