The job itself is ok, albeit a little repetitive. The benefits are ok and your coworkers are usually pretty decent. The problem lies within the low base pay, wildly varying workload, and management that loves to harass and micromanage you in the lab so you can be reminded of the terrible job you’re doing and how you are not learning or working fast enough. Special projects are also assigned to you, often with little or imprecise instructions on what to do to carry them out. Then you will be blamed for not asking enough questions or just flat out not following instructions, of course of which were never given to you to begin with. Employees are targeted whenever they make a single mistake and then continuously micromanaged afterward, especially new ones. Deep investigation of the cause of a problem that occurred during sample preparation or logistics is vehemently discouraged by management, and favoritism politics are so abundant it is offensive to the senses. You will be lured in by kind treatment at first then berated and haggled for both any mistake you ever make and blamed for the mistakes of others, even when the paperwork or electronic trail clearly states the origins of any problem. You will also be expected to work on the other side almost every day, under the guise of “improving your skillset”, when it is really just to compensate for overall understaffing and high turnover rate. I was a temp at BV and I did not feel valued. I was working every day until 6 or even 7, which is two hours after the building closes. This was a problem because vital people would leave at 5pm when reports weren't completed which would cause a constant backup of reports. There were also times when there was no work to be done whatsoever, which was disconcerting. Either I was very busy or not busy at all, there was no in between. Even when there were no reports to be done I still had to try to find work to do.
I could not take part in any of the discounts or outings that the permanent employees were a part of. The permanent employees get paid more, have more benefits, and take part in social team building exercises that exclude the temps. Holiday parties also exclude temporary employees. After being there for over a year I was let go without anyone at work telling me that it was my last day. They called me at 7:30pm on Friday night and told me that my employment period had ended. People constantly disappeared or switched positions within the building. It was not exactly easy to focus on my work; the openness of the room was a constant rattle. Lab samples being moved back and forth constantly making loud noise along with everyone clacking on their keyboards and yapping on their phones. International Work Atmosphere with Scientific Laboratories
After the company brought in an international team to reconstruct the business model to a more international way of thinking, the moral of the employees has unfortunately taken a sour turn. We, as in my Sample Control team, are required to open all packages from UPS, FedEx, and DHL, also all freight trucks that arrive. We then must organize all product, and for the rest of the day log the vendor information into our companies database. Throughout the day we also deal with all out going mail via UPS, FedEx and various trucking companies. We are required to handle issues within our department and outside of our department because of the fact that we are the first step of the process and see all 300 packages that come in on a daily basis.
The team I work for, are some of the hardest working individuals within the work place. We are required to have all task done before days end. This requires us to work 10-12 hour days.
What I will take out of this company, is the knowledge that I have obtain on how to multitask on a continuous basis. The information may be overwhelming due to the change, but it keeps you sharp all work day long.
The most enjoyable part of the job is, and I'm sure this gets said a lot, but the coworkers you engage with on a daily basis. These people are here to come together and work as proficiently as they can. Though it gets overwhelming, the team work aspect can not be overlooked, and the bonds that you can make are special.
Friendly work environment with bad pay and bad management
Please note that this review is only for the specific location where I worked. My coworkers were great people, and we worked well together as a team. We definitely had fun while being professional at the same time. HUGE problem with management... they will not hire from within. I have a B.S. degree, and started from the ground-up in the routine lab. I learned how to perform all the tests as well as performing machine maintenance, and continuously expressed interest in taking on new responsibilities for a promotion, but management always insisted on turning towards an agency whenever an upper-position opened up in the lab. EVEN WORSE is that I was PROMISED a promotion to a specific position around Christmas time, which I then relayed that message to my friends and family... and it was extremely embarrassing to go back and tell all of my people that the "plans had changed." Management will tell you what you want to hear just to keep you around. If you're fine with staying tied down to one position while rarely even getting an annual cost-of-living raise, then this is the job for you. Once they see you do well in a certain position, they will not want to move you. I am glad to be done with this place and all the empty promises, and I can say I wasted a lot of time and effort at this facility. Once again, coworkers were awesome (we're in this struggle together).
Pays $4 lower than average lab tech job in Johnson county Kansas. They are not honest or upfront about pay or raises. They company fails to take care of its employees as it advertises and is so proud of. I was a Lab Tech and expected to preform tasks far beyond my pay grade. They paid me lower than what was advertised and then said I would be up for a raise in 6 months- after 6 months when asked about receiving a raise I was told the company has decided not to give raises. They are not straight forward or honest about the schedule or what hours you are expected to work. They act very nice and like they care but management doesn’t follow company protocol- when I reached out to HR about a noncompliance on managements end wanting to open up an investigation I got no response. I was made so uncomfortable I ended up just quitting. The pay was not worth the hustle. The job itself was fun, interesting and I learned a lot. Understaffed with 5 employees and the lab would take on projects on top of our regular client load. Projects that we did not have the capacity to take on. There we No compensations offered for all the extra workload and is a chaotic atmosphere to work in. One of the managers would harass employees so they moved her position but she was still able to come to the lab and she didn’t treat people with respect she makes people feel bad for no reason. Overall worst company I have ever worked for.

The day starts early before the facility is open to get a head start on grading. This helps the facility know what they are expecting grade wise.
Depending on location, you learn how to run commodity samples through a lab setting. Braking down the sample, putting samples through machines to get moisture, proteins and to separate dockage from wheat, corn, ect.
Management for the most part was good. A few managers i have worked for have not been properly train in management skills. Most have just moved up through the company through hard work or loyalty. This can create problems for workers because you get a "boss" and not a "leader". I just think there should be training courses for management.
Co-workers that i have worked with over 9 years have been great. There has only been one worker that has ever been an issue and he didn't last very long.
The hardest part of the job is harvest season. You're going to put in long hours but the pay off is the overtime. Harvest doesn't last very long though. Can be from 2 weeks to 3 months depending on location and state. Houston has about a 3 month harvest, while PNW has 2 weeks to a month.
The most enjoyable part is the down time. As long as your work is done, no one is going to tell you to do anything. Your boss wont have you grab a broom just because its slow. In this down time you can study for school or read a book.
Excellent place to work, especially if you're self motivated and productive! I definitely feel like my work performance is noticed and appreciated.
Prep Manager is awesome! Admin/Office staff is friendly, proficient and helpful. Shift leads are friendly and helpful too. Everyone in a supervisory role is friendly, helpful and approachable.
Employees are treated very well; especially as compared to other local companies in this same industry.

Promotions appear to me to be earned/deserved and based on performance and/or experience.
Most positions in the Prep Dept do require PPE (coveralls and respirator/facemask) so not the ideal situation for talking a lot while you're working but you are allowed to listen to airbuds/headphones. As with any other job/site in this industry, it is a dusty work environment which doesn't bother me at all but some people don't like this.
A typical workday for me is to clock in, go to my work station and resume where I left off or select a new job to start based on priority list provided. If/When I have a question I approach the shift lead or Prep Manager and ask how to proceed. No rigid break schedule. No rigid lunch schedule.

Caveat: I did not have a good experience, so take this review in context. I'm sure there are people who really like the company.
1) My manager was very unorganized and uninvolved. I worked in the NE region but had to rely on the manager of the SE region to get a laptop, phone and company car. Otherwise, I wouldn't even have had those. When I raised concerns about my manager they were ignored.
2) My pay was standard even with over 15 years in the industry, the company is a big-time penny pincher. They'd say 'frugal' but I'd say they make you feel bad about your expenses every week. Like you're stealing out of their grandma's purse.
3) The phones are the cheapest iPhones they could find and my laptop was, no kidding, a six year old Fujitsu. And everything is so locked down you can't even change the screen background.
4) The culture is broken from the top down. Case in point, they don't try to incentivize people to stay, they try to penalize people from leaving. They don't embrace new technologies, they don't pay well and they are mistrustful of those in their charge.
It was very difficult to leave a company I have spent so much time at. However, you begin to realize that you are a commodity and not a valued member, no matter how much you contribute. You make the choice for yourself but it's a hard pass for me.
Let me just summarize that the only enjoyable parts of my position were working with PCR, Microbiology, and a couple of coworkers. Before accepting the position, I thought I had a clear understanding of what was going to be asked of me, that I was fairly accommodated AND THAT THIS WAS NOT A PRODUCTION JOB. Wrong.The site is understaffed and hats I should not have had to wear were worn. Some days were just those tasks and then was chastised for not having the skills needed for the position the supervisor was looking for. There was drama everyday and seemed to be just swept under the rug until it got to be overwhelming for management and the staff, not to mention the disorganization in environment, process, and scheduling. New people are expected to be everything the department needs from Day 1.The hardest part of the job was being made feel like you're not good enough any job because you can't do 4+ things at once and made me have a negative perspective on lab work and Production. THEN, I had to haggle HR about getting my last paycheck because they forgot about it.
Thankful I have found another position and I'm not going back to the lab environment for hopefully...ever. But if I had to, it definitely would not be with this company.

After nearly 30 years in engineering this by far is the worst company i have had the misfortune to be employed by its all about quantity not quality lets begin,
When I arrived in Manchester everything was rushed and thrown at me they were extremely pushy to get me started ( I did think at the time what had I done)
The training is too short with an emphases on getting you out there earning the company money.( one day training on certain items really)
After the in depth training you will be sent outside and within a month they will increase your inspection hours to between 32-35 hours per week, this means that you will have to inspect 32-35 hours worth of assets to meet your targets so factoring in your driving time to and between sites and unless you live right next to a factory or string of garages you will be pushing 50 hours a week ( great for family life).
They will monitor when you report so if you are lucky enough and finish early just be careful
The company car is worse than useless lowest spec and remember you will be spending hours in it
The company phone is as pathetic as the car useless out dated it looks fantastic when you are stood next to clients obtaining their numbers, I did notice at the company induction a lot of the office staff getting nice I phones which was great to see.
The planner will delight in giving you the following weeks work at the latest possible time. On Friday this basically means that you will have to call clients, finish report

El día típico comenzaba con una breve reunion interna, de allí nos dirigiamos a las dependencias de la mandante para tramitar el permiso de trabajo, reportar las novedades y recibir información relevante a nuestra labor. Luego, con el permiso vigente y nuestros implementos de seguridad en regla haciamos una visita a terreno, inspeccionando las áreas recién terminadas de la nueva planta, chequeando que la instrumentación instalada estuviese de acuerdo a las especificaciones del proyecto. La visita normalmente terminaba al medio dia hora en la cual almorzabamos en el casino junto a los demás compañeros. En la tarde se hacian los reportes en formato digital de los datos recolectados en la mañana, y se efectuaban algunas visitas puntuales a la construcción. Al final de la tarde se enviaba al mandante el reporte con las observaciones de campo, para que este gestionara las acciones correctivas sugeridas con las contratistas a cargo de la ingenieria y el montaje.
Respecto al ambiente de trabajo interno de Bureau Veritas se puede decir que en general es bueno y que el trato es cordial entre todo el personal.
En cuanto al sueldo si bien no es malo para el estándar local, resulta bajo para la responsabilidad del cargo y respecto de los valores internacionales.
La parte mas dura del trabajo fueron las dificultades para tratar con las empresas contratistas a cargo de la ingenieria y el montaje, y el escaso apoyo por parte de la empresa mandante para llevar a cabo nuestra función.

Un dia normal de trabajo antes de hacer cualquier tipo de labor era llenar la charla pre-operacional y hacer la charla de 5 minutos diariamente, luego descargar las ordenes de trabajo par asi hacer las verificaciones correspondientes. Lo que aprendi en la empresa es trabajar en grupo, aprender a desembolverse, personalmente como conductor diariamente ayudaba al tecnico en lo que el pedia para la labor y aprendi a realizar las verificaciones viendo y ayudando al tecnico a realizar los trabajos, el trabajo era en verificar si los cortes de luz estaban efectivos de no estarlo teniamos que cortar la luz del predio de acuerdo a la orden de trabajo, haciamos las verificaciones o servicios a la empresa electrica EDELNOR . En la direccion del area tenia a una mujer que era la cordinadora muy buena persona, jefa y lider, nos enseñaba y nos inculcava al estudio para superarse mas como trabajador y persona. Mis colegas en el trabajo se portaban todos bien con todos primero estaba el respeto y la igualdad para todos en general . From the start of a work day till the end of work I am constantly on my feet to meet the targets of the day. There is alot of pressure on me to keep the production of this Lab on target.
I have started from the bottom and over the years have been promoted to Management, as Assistant Manager.
I have learnt Sample preparation,Lab Supervisor and have worked in Fire Assay learning every area on site. Since being Assistant Manager I have learnt admin responsibilities,ordering consumables for all departments on site, organising the shifts daily, inducting new employees and filling in where needed.
There has been six Managers here since I started in 2006. The last 3 Managers I have been Assistant Manager to. They all have their own style of Management and have relied on me alot to get a feel for the job site and the employees. We are without a Manager at the moment and I have been asked to Manage the Lab, but, without a Managers wage or priveledges, (a vehicle, managers accomadation....) this is the reason I am looking for other work.
My co-workers are a pleasure to work with, a little respect goes a long way. We have pre-shift meetings before every start of the day where workers can be involved in the process of how our day will be shaped.

From day one I was travelling 2/3 hours each way to get to my first job of the day, management are clueless and just look to pass the buck on any issue.
Planners act like the nice guys but as soon as the phone is down, they are working against you.
The pay for this job is a low to mid-range for a surveyor role but for the work that is expected, this is not reflected in the pay.
8 weeks 'training' at the start (this has been reduced now) was a joke. First 2 weeks were okay but after that I was at home phoning surveyors asking to tag along which led to me not having the required skill codes when I passed the 13 exams required and 2 years later I have had no further training let alone the HNC promised to in the interview. (HNC meant to start after 6 months).
Voiced my concerns on numerous occasions to my area manager but nothing ever came of them, not even a measly email.
Was offered a transfer due to a relocation but am taking a pay cut in a new job to get away and be happy.
This job will grind you down, the company will treat you like a number and not a person. I beg anyone not to join this company if you wish to be happy.
The only reason I stuck at it for 2 years was to gain some further experience befrore my relocation. Any other Tesing, Inspection and Certification company is better to work for.

Its easy to start. Lots of studying at first but once you get in then it becomes fast pace.
