Unit Director | James City, NC | Feb 24, 2019
I was hired on as a Restaurant Manager trainee with plan to come out as unit director!
I'm going to be completely honest. Bojangles has one of the best training programs I've seen as far as learning about bojangles, its products and recipes along with stations! Working there really taught me alot about myself and about sometimes having to take a seat on the passenger side in order to learn how to drive the ship! This was very tough for me having been a general manager for a while in my prior role. It's really tough to give a review on this topic because things could have been so much better if I had learned that before!. Now, as far as training manager style is concerned, it varies from location to location. My particular experience was an eye opener. My trainer was really good at his job! I mean really go7od, the only negative I have about that is I sometimes did not agree with his training method, which I realized is specifically tailored to him and his personality, but it made me feel very small most of the time! That's just me. He was very by the book, and I must say, the man knows his materials, execution to me was the issue. Overall, I'll say that he was a great leader and a wonderful person to learn from, I just dint think I had worked long enough to understand his personality and leadership style. There was also another trainer that came in to work with trainees on a weekly basis! Now her style is more of what I'm used to, and reminds me alot of my management/training style, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the days she was present, and t
ProsExcellent training, benefits, and compensation!
ConsJust some organizational issues in the chain of command that, if fixed, could help the company retain some great people!

The job it self was easy, but there were toxic people who shouldn't be working there.
I lost all respect for the company after receiving a class action lawsuit saying they are not obeying the over time labor laws. They avoid giving employee evaluations for their raise. Until the employee would ask at times. The hiring process was overlooked, not taken seriously, only based on a online personality test which can be flawed. They would just hire anyone who says they want a job rather than who would be good for whatever position. Most new hires I have encountered seemed very distraught and nervous in which some of the older crew would judge them and talk about them openly to where the new hire can hear them. Typical employee would last around 3 months average. Mostly a month a new hire would just no call no show sometimes leaving the store short staffed. Most times the store was always short staff leaving the employees to work multiple positions durring the shift, which was supposed to not be allowed, also changing the atmosphere to a toxic environment. Customer complaints were high. Turn over was crazy. Management didn't do well on training. If a new hire doesn't get the training they deserve they end up getting terminated. The managers push new hires to be trained by other crew members sometimes still new them selves. They allow discrimination to happen. I have herd one older guy call someone the n word and was still allowed to work there. Also I've herd body shamming, looks of people being talked about, the privacy of people what they do outside of wo
ProsPay was good if you were a shift leader or higher up, Company training good on the computer or taking the boU class, Employee meals $4 off, Flexible schedule for hourly.
ConsManagers dont get breaks for 10 hour shifts, Lack of care for employees, If you get sick and call out its counted against you, you would get wrote up but it depends if the managers like you or not, Favoritism, no equality, there hardly is any recognition for hard workers, You must be loud to communicate.

Terrible management, high turnover rate
This is the worst place I have ever worked at. I've worked here for a year and not advanced at all. In fact, I'm threatened with termination every few months for little to no reason. The job itself isn't bad. Most of the customers are a delight, making biscuits and chicken is actually relaxing, and the drive-thru is fun. It's the hours, the crew, and the management that are lacking. Hours aren't consistent. At all. One week I could be at a full 40, the next I'll work maybe two days. With bills and rent and everything this gets a little frustrating. The management is endlessly frustrating. We never seem to keep a shift manager for more than a few months. Each time we get a new one they seem to know less and care less about their job than the one before. Our current management is rude to both employees and customers alike. It's bad enough that our store manager outright quit because of the people the unit director was bringing in. They're not just rude, they're undertrained and promote unsafe work environments. They ask employees to come in even when they're sick and vomiting. In fact, the day I started vomiting at work I insisted I go home because that's unsanitary and a health risk to the customers. They tried to get me to stay. The time I worked next I got basically yelled at for leaving because the shift manager had told our temporary store manager that I "didn't seem very sick." Scheduling is a nightmare, because I almost never get off when scheduled. I could be schedu

okay job, if you need a paycheck
Worked there when the store first opened 10 years ago. It was a fine job, I needed a paycheck. But then they needed to watch labor. Loris is unique. Having helped out in other locations, those other locations are big on sandwiches. Late night especially. Be it a biscuit sandwich, a Cajun filet sandwich. But not Loris. They are big on tailgate specials. Meaning a bunch of chicken needs to be ready at night. I'm not talking 8pm, I mean 9:45pm, 15 minutes until close. That affects how much cleaning can be done. Can't get to all the chicken fryers. Get flour all over the chicken area. And a tailgate includes sides. Most people who order sandwiches order fries. Most people who order a tailgate order mac and cheese or dirty rice. So, having people wait for these items that late caused bad reviews, and management came down on us. The same management that told us to break down equipment early so we can get out on time, but they didn't realize we needed the equipment to cook. They didn't believe people came in at 9:45 on a Tuesday to order a 20piece tailgate. And why would they, their other stores didn't act like that. And honestly, the moneymaker at bojangles is not their chicken, but moving sandwiches. Loris just isn't a high volume store, except after church on Sundays. What also didnt help is the older guys in the morning, they hung out for hours drinking coffee. We loved them, but they had a direct line to our district manager to complain about the quality of

Job overview and thought what I was supposed to do
They hired me to come in and so called help them with employee/management problems they were having. I took the job, because I felt with my extensive management experience and knowledge I would be able to help them figure out what was going on.. After 6-7 weeks of extensive training and evaluating at the same time, I came to the frightening conclusion that the employees were not the problem solely, but upper management was the problem.. I sat down with the regional Manager and gave him my extensive report and explained to him what and where things needed to be changed, because if systems were in place and needed to be followed, then everyone needs to be on the same page. When 4 of the 5 managers don't follow the proper procedure, and let employees shy away from what systems work, then there is a problem. And the system will keep failing. I pointed that out to him. after several attempts and him knowing what needed to be done, I have come to the harsh reality, that he is either too close to these other managers and feels obligated to them for some reason, therefor puts the company at risk and not first, or he is to lazy to do what is needed to put the company first!! sometimes you have to make difficult decisions to make the company run correctly and make the employees respect the system you are instilling..I know what it takes to make the company run, and make money, and also take care of customers, and also have the respect of fellow employees and or management. I also know

Horrible workplace, Bad culture and Bad Management
Worked here for over 2 years. Firstly when your hired, you're promised guaranteed raises after 60 days, 90 days, and a year and every year after but they don't give raises. When I started the starting pay was 8$ hourly, I worked for over a year then decided to leave because I hadn't received a raise even tho I had been promised one by management multiple times. In that Year I had one of the worst working experiences a student could have. Firstly they advertise flexible scheduling, but they're so short staffed you're forced to work whatever they want even if it interferes with your outside life. As a student I needed days off for school and exams and had to fight tooth and nail just to get them, not to mention if you request days off the management bad mouths you to the staff and makes you feel inferior because your not available 24/7 to work for them. They'll schedule you for more hours than you ask for, and any mention of working less days is brushed aside. After I and many others left they upped the wage to 9$ because they were so short staffed, yet if they would've have us our raises we were promised we wouldn't have left in the first place. I came back expecting changes and being promised better treatment only to find a worse experience. The quality of the day shift crew was very poor to say the least respectfully but management always plays favorites to them, and night shift suffered for it of course. After an incident on dayshift where a customer found a roach in their

Remarkable fast service with a smile.
Depending on who was working that day, Bojangles was a fun and happy place to be. We all were eager to work in a place that was competative when it came to getting work hours. While there I learned the importance of team work and that quality of life is greatly effected by a positive or negative point of view. Our managers and Unit Director did their best when it came to working around our day to day challenges. They were hard workers whom did not mind working beside us, even covering a shift of a subordinate worker just to keep our labor hours low so that we all kept our jobs. I most enjoyed my loyal customers who came everyday. They were so kind and generous with telling the managers how well of a job we all did. The last day of my two weeks notice, my managers suprised me with a beautiful cake for which we all shared and it was the hardest cake I ever had to eat. The hardest part of my job was the cleaning, especially if it were a rainy day or the day after it rained. All the road construction workers would come in by the truck loads with their muddy shoes and it would get tracked everywhere. They would come for breakfast and lunch and I had to have it all cleaned up before the next rush while taking care of customers and helping to pack food for the drive through window. It was hard, but I was one of the best workers who could get it done.
Prosexcellent service speed, good customer relationships, stern managment that also listened to the employees, reward systems for hard working employees and outside social events that strenghten the team.
ConsDrastic over night price raises that scared away many customers, located in a small town

Less than satisfying.
I was a very dedicated worker who did not mind working early hours or closing. There were multiple weekends where I opened the store in the morning after leaving it around 11 pm. I have even worked multiple shifts in one day. I was usually the first person to be called into work if another person called out. For this reason, I was often scheduled inconsistently, meaning that I was scheduled, for the most part, the hours that no one else wished to work. I was also treated poorly, received my 90 day raise in 5 months, and were personally attacked by management on multiple occasions. I enjoyed the customers and being able to satisfy them, a lot actually, and would love a job in the customer service industry. Also, and I can not lie, the $4 meals for employees was a big bonus. But after I was written up and had my hours cut in half, and then attacked by multiple managers verbally, I decided that I had enough. Towards the end of my stint at this establishment, I called out a day ahead and asked a co-worker to fill in for me so I could attend a study session. I was told that if I did not go to work, I would be written up. Long story short (although I'm willing to elaborate), I chose my education. This is the only time that I have ever been written up. The following week, I went from my usual 20 hours to 9 hours. With all that had occurred, such as my raise being postponed, poor treatment, no breaks, lack of necessary equipment, and being forced to choose between my education and my

Stressful
When i worked at Bojangles in the beginning I mainly worked in the front of the store cashiering, taking orders and preparing and serving customer's orders. During down times or if business was slow I would make sure the dining room is clean by sweeping, wiping tables, taking out the trash, and etc. and making sure it's stocked. About two months later after working at Bojangles I started working in the drive thru. The drive thru is very fast paced and you have to make sure you complete each order in a certain amount of time. I would either be taking money and handing out the orders or taking the orders and ringing it up. Mainly during second shift sometimes you have to do it all at once. One thing I have learned working at Bojangles is how to mulitask. You have to be able to multi task working at job like this. As for my coworkers there were some I thought were cool and liked being around and there were others that I didn't care much for. Then there were some lazy co-workers as well. I was not pleased with management at all. There seemed to have been some favoritism going on at the store I worked at. The managers were not very helpful or patient at all and they expect you to learn things quickly. They were also very rude and didn't communicate very well. The hardest part of working at Bojangles was being able to multitask and be fast paced at the same time. What i did enjoy most about working at Bojangles is the relationships i had with some of my co-workers.

Productive, Busy workplace with great coworkers
A day working at Bojangles for me includes, Breading chicken, Deck Scrubbing (Scrubbing sidewalks, drive-thur, Dumpster pad), Managing product on front line & drive-thur, Ensuring my coworkers are caught up on their product and not struggling or behind. Making sure no one runs out of tea, the soda syrup is changed, the boxes are broken down, inventory is rotated and correctly dated, Chicken & fry vats are filtered and cleaned . Then at the end of my shift I have to make sure the upright cooler is fully stocked, the floors are swept & scrubbed, All sinks are cleaned, and all areas in the kitchen have towels and aprons. My co-workers depended on me to help them or make biscuits/sandwiches when the assigned person wasn't at there station. My coworkers didn't mind calling me for assistance because they knew I wouldn't mind helping or doing anything they asked if I had time. Some of the managers were great but some didn't really care or showed favoritism.I guess that comes with every job but It was a learning experience that taught me to work hard & accurate as possible. The hardest part of the Job to me is when I had to run 3 positions while my coworker would be chilling doing anything but It kept me busy which I liked. The most enjoyable part of it was getting acknowledged for working hard & making sure the store was never behind. It made me feel Proud & Accomplished.
ProsFree Drinks, 50% discounts, & Seeing the satisfaction of customers
ConsCrazy, Aggressive customers that aren't satisfied

I submitted a application on a Wednesday then about 2 hours later the manger called me. She offered a interview then or the next day and I chose Thursday. I start the Tuesday after that... pretty quick process.

Put in an application online, was notified just a few hours later that the manager wanted me to come in for an interview the next morning, did the finalizing paperwork almost immediately after getting home, and then started working the next day.

Not very professional at all. “When can you start?” - Should have been a red flag from the beginning.

Company asks you to tell them about your self, why you like the food service industry. How your job is if you are presently working.
