okay place
okay place to work. nothing really bad to say. it was a good college job. pressure from management to come in even if you are sick though. not to much stress
I've been a sales associate, manager trainee, and assistant manager here. First and foremost, the only full-time employees in this entire company are corporate in El Segundo, or management. If you are neither, you are part-time, and minimum wage.
The sales aspect isn't bad, and if you have the ability to sound confident in what you're saying (whether it's true or not), you will be a top salesperson. There wasn't much pressure for sales initially, and rightfully so as this is hardly a competitive-wage job. But more recently they have been pushing individuals to track their sales, and harass every customer that walks through the door to give up their e-mail address to receive coupons and weekly ads via Big 5's "cutting edge" program, the E-Team. Seriously, they want every manager and salesperson asking every customer to sign up for the E-Team, then they want cashiers asking everyone who checks out the same thing. While I understand the idea behind the E-Teams, they really want each customer asked for this multiple times during each visit, and it feels almost like you're harassing people. They come for sports equipment, and your main priorities are to assist them and get their e-mail address via any means necessary. Stores are compared to others in their region based on the metric of how many e-mails they get daily.
Also, they do not care about part-timers at all. I've been to many manager meetings, and they always push the same agenda. First, managers are to bas
ProsLow pressure sales, 20% discount on full price (10% on clearance/sale), management
ConsHigh stress, corporate is constantly changing how things are done, minimum wage, management
Fun Place to work, but be prepared to do a lot of work
Big 5 was a very fun place to work because with the store being as small as it is it requires you to keep very busy doing projects here and there. Usually the days are pretty understaffed so you have to manage multiple jobs at once usually.
Big 5 gives opportunity to learn people skill as well as customer service. The job is fast pace and keeps you on your toes. There is very rarely a dull moment when working which helps time fly. I enjoy the people I work with. Managers are great and supportive. They are also understanding and flexible with work schedules.

Great job for working on customer service skills, self problem solving, and telephone skills, along with gaining knowledge of sports.
A typical day at work would consist of ringing up customers' purchases, returns, and exchanges while promoting the Big 5 online coupons they could receive. Cleaning duties included putting back returned or unwanted items and cleaning up surrounding areas. Closing duties included counting till, sweeping register area, taking out trash, and picking up any fallen or moved merchandise.
ProsKnowledge about sports and events around town, great employees to work with and managers as well.
ConsNot enough hours or pay

Very busy during the day.
During the day it was usually super busy, especially in the shoe department. We always had different sales going on so we put up new sales tags every week. During the nigh shift it was usually super slow and sometimes hard to find something to do.
Pros3 breaks
ConsShort breaks, not enough hours

Sporting
At Big 5 sporting goods a typical day is usually stocking, helping customers and doing whatever is needed. i have learned how to cash out customers, stock, price tag and many other things. The hardest part of the job is learning the different kinds of areas there are and what we have in store. You have to get to know what they sell so when a customer asks if we have that product you can direct them.
Great place to work with fantastic advancement opportunities if you are willing to relocate
Absolutey excellent place to work. Great benefits and company is definately employee oriented. Salary and benefit package some of the best. You will be rewarded based on what you bring to the company in loyalty, work ethic, etc. My reason for leaving was a family matter that occurred after I transferred to New Mexico, requiring my return to Texas.
