The benefits at BASF are great! The pay, 401K, time off for new births for mothers and fathers, vacation time, and short-term disability insurance is next to none. When Covid hit last year, BASF continued paying its employees for 5 weeks to stay home and to stay safe. For business reasons, we had to go on unemployment; however, after paying us for 5 weeks, the unemployment didn't last long and everyone was brought back to work.
The plant I worked at did a rotating schedule. This was implemented after employees were asked to vote on whether to remain on fixed shifts or to move to rotating shifts. The employees voted to remain fixed. Management decided this was unacceptable and put us on rotating shifts. It is not uncommon to be forced into working the rotation weekend. The Site has had a hard time getting full-time employees in and when they do, they don't stay long. The site has a reputation in the community and it's not a good one. No one in the community wants to work a rotating schedule. It is often the reason friends and family who are told about the rotating schedule decline putting in a resume/application. Management is aware of this, but refuses to address the issue. BASF used to be the place to work in my community. People were beating at the gate to get in. Now people are beating at the doors to get out. A lot of people have voluntarily left recently due to rotating schedules and poor management style.

Good Company, Mediocre Management, Mixed Review
BASF hires very smart, capable employees. Generally people are very collegial, kind, polite, optimistic, positive and helpful. The company enjoys tremendous success in most of its markets and segments. The company prides itself on both superior (engineered) products and superior field services. BASF achieves a nice balance of promoting from within and hiring from the outside.
In the USA, the four best sites for career development are Florham Park, NJ (national headquarters), Geismer, LA, Freeport, TX and Wyandotte, MI. These are large, multidivisional sites that allow for career movement without relocation.
Managers are minimally and poorly trained in the art and skill of supervision and management. The company has recently outsourced much of HR practices to back office providers leaving many sites with very low (or no) representation.
Except in the area of safety, accounting and process chemistry, management systems are not well codified or documented. Learning is excessively on-the-job and experiential. Standards and methods seem to be excessively customized leading to inefficiency and constant reinventing of the wheel.
Careers and performance are strongly self-directed, with little management guidance. Internal interviewing practices and discipline are weak. People often rotate into jobs for which they are ill-prepared of a poor fit. Performance management and professional development is weak for the middle 80%.

The problem is that these managers have no training / qualifications at all.If you get one of the micro managers ( there are many ) then you are doomed to a dreary day at work.Overtime is expected and yes , you can decline it , but it will come up on your yearly review.Whatever good things that you did during the year are forgotten , but trust me after 11 years there , they will remember the mistakes you make.The manager that I worked for , kept a file on every employee he had , and kept specific notes for yearly review. If you work there ,I suggest that you keep a book too.
Human Resources are a joke , all issues are handled by the manager , HR is only there to hire/fire or to give you a phone number.So if you have a manager that you don't get along with , try to transfer out , but most of the time HR will not let that happen.Remember , they work for the company , not for you! All a manager has to do is lie about you , and you are GONE!
This site has always scored very low on company reviews that employees take.Last one that we did , the Huntsville site scored a 32 out of 100.The Madison Chamber of Commerce had employees do one too , but we never heard the results of it. ( wonder why?)

Good pay and benefits, but once the latest supervisor was hired and the site director left...everything changed...So now if you do not like to follow policies and procedures, miss lots of time and are a horrible employee then this is the place for you!!! Lazy co-workers are threatened by good workers and make life miserable for you. Supervisor was more worried about being friends with the younger guys then following procedures. When pointed out to him he told the employee that you were the one complaining instead of being a supervisor and handling it. Production manager claimed he would work with me but totally blew me off. Had a safety incident held against me from my 1st yr of employment that was mostly the companies fault not having safety devices in place and operational. Points against you NEVER go away no matter how long you're there. Dedicated endless hours of overtime to this company to make it successful and they wouldn't even pay me my bonus that I earned from the previous year when they let me go 2 days before the payout! Called corporate numerous times for black and white documentation about the policy that said I was not eligible for the bonus and it was never produced!!! the site I work at is a maximize output at all costs kind of site. you can expect to make good money at this site but you will also spend the majority of your time here. 12 hour shifts for 7 days then 2 days off, then repeat the cycle when short handed (short handed majority of the time). the days or nights are long and stressful you are severely micromanaged to the point to were it slows you down. management does not care about your home life, in fact they purposely brought in management from a distant location I guess for the purpose of changing our culture at this plant. hardly anyone in management started from the bottom of this plant anymore and i don't see anyone climbing the ranks to a better position being likely. the majority of your fellow employees will be lazy, slimy, cutthroats that will throw you under the bus to save their neck. this plant is unionized which has its pros and cons. protects you from management but also you are at the mercy of the union leaders because they do not follow the voice of the people. the pros, good benefits. decent pay straight time excellent overtime system. anything over 8 hours in 1 day is overtime pay. job security in my department depends on the area you are in. for my most people are clawing to get out and take another job in some other department and they can never keep this area fully staffed so they really cant afford to get rid of the employees that are willing to stay. id recommend finding somewhere else to work you are jus

I would have liked to stay at BASF (working through one of their contract agencies) due to the flexible work hours, but one of the managers was uncomfortable to work with - she had a tendency to sabotage the work of the contract workers. For example, she would switch the labels on different inventory pieces to "test" if the contract workers would catch the mistake before they packaged the inventory. This resulted in several pieces of mislabeled inventory having to be thrown out since product identity could no longer be assured. When confronted about this destructive behavior, she denied that it was occurring, even with evidence. Workers had to go out of their way to prevent this sabotage from occurring, such as setting labels under weights to prove they had been tampered with, and making a point of staring at her when she was in the room so she wouldn't touch anything. Higher management sent her to remedial management classes, but she continued the bad behavior. The other managers were fair to contract employees otherwise.
There is no room to advance and no paid time off, so don't expect to enjoy that you'll be missing out on a lot of paychecks come December. Hours are extremely flexible Monday through Friday, but there is almost never Saturday or Sunday work. You do not get lunch paid for (it is 30 minutes long). If they lay you off, they might elect to not give you a reason why you're getting laid off.

I assisted my supervisor with the management of product recipes information which were housed in a huge file bank; comprised of both hard copy and database. I did data entry and product recipe reviews to help ensure our products were current and properly certified according to government Import/Export regulations. Hard copy files were reviewed regularly to determine which were to be kept in the Information Center and which files were sent to Records Retention, either on site or off site.
I learned some logistics; how to better to communicate with our German counterparts, our management and co-workers. I also learned to accept criticism and more responsibility; when to ask for help and when to trust my judgment.
Most of the time I did well with management and co-workers. I did not always do my best when I did not understand what was expected of me.
The hardest issue for me was being low man, rated on the bell curve system, and having an exemplary performance review year after year. Being the only classified clerk spoke for itself in our division. I liked being a clerk, I did not like our evaluation system.
My best experience was when my boss told me that there was nothing my job required that she could not teach me; and she did teach me well.

Typically in a shift you would run 5-20 different physical and analytic chemistry tests on several different in-process products. This would range from something as simple as density to something as complicated as running the ICP to determine the specific makeup of a given product. Sadly this is fairly monotonous work and hardly varies. Work is sporadic and there is not much to do during down time. Working in the lab is essentially a dead-end for advancement within the company.
I learned the ins and outs of manufacturing and what quality control means for a company. I also gained much safety experience within manufacturing and chemical handling.
There is a lack of communication between any of the departments within the plant, but Management is doing a lot to improve the site, but that is a slow change. There is not much being done to improve the lab for this site, but it looks like much effort is being placed into changing the rest of the site for the better.
My co-workers were good people and generally very friendly, if it weren't for them I may have quit the job before the termination of my contract.

So I starred out as a Forklift Driver and with in six months I became a Machine Operator. I began to learn that this position carried a lot of responsibility and demand. You are the leader of a cell. This position to me was One of the most important positions in the entire plant. Not trying to take away from the others, but the buck begins and stop here. If the operator does not produce a very good coated product, the company is out of time and money. So, training in this area is extremely important. The operator also has to have a flexible personality dealing with people and management.
Now do to the culture, there was inadequate training. Too much unneeded competition with trainers and operators in training. Some of the trainers are not willing to adequately train the new operators, due to job security. Some new operators learn from trial and error. The work hours are too flexible for management, but not Flexible for the employees. This creates a work environment that is not suitable for the culture. Basf could actually become a very good place of employment, if the culture had a makeover.

For a giant company, BASF has excellent corporate values in a multitude of areas & really strives to live by them. Very nice facilities, good training, lots of good people at every level. Great benefits, great funding for projects & equipment.
Still, the corporation as a whole (and Ag Products as a division) seems to buy into every single stoopid management fad or politically correct cause that comes down the pike, ESP. regarding performance reviews. "Dilbert" could've worked here & noticed little difference. Also, it's VERY difficult to get promoted or to switch groups b/c corporate HR policies are hyper-rigid.....all substantive changes occur w/o any real significant employee input (tho' management does go thru the motions), and change that does occur is about as quick as changing the direction of a fully-loaded barge.
Oddly, tho', they are very family-friendly & accommodating to familial issues as they arise.

A typical day at BASF would start with a daily operation meeting to discuss the plant's status, then we'll proceed to our day to day operations (depending on your function in the organization). Normal days include various visits to the control room to get different information regarding costs, delivery of finished product, maintenance reports, among others. We also have different meetings among all the other site's plant that we attend during our day.
I have learned almost all my industrial knowledge since I began working on this site. I now can say I am an effective consultant and implementer on Lean Manufacturing projects in an area that is not common to see this sort of project (chemical companies). Interesting and insightful place to do work experience.
I undertook a week's work experience at BASF plc and I found the whole experience to be very insightful into what it would be like if I were to actually work for a company like this in their legal department. I worked for the week from 9am until 5pm with an hour for lunch, and throughout the day I completed many tasks for the head of the department. Within the week I researched queries relating to the registered share capital of one of BASF's UK group companies, I sorted through the property deeds for various BASF UK owned and leased sides and amended the deeds schedules to accurately reflect the contents of the deeds packets, I created two bible's of documents relating to a legal entity consolidation of two BASF UK group companies, I wrote a letter to a consortium of energy companies in response to a request for comments on a proposed development, and I archived a number of legal correspondence files, among other jobs throughout my time at BASF. My manager for the week was very helpful and friendly and was very approachable if I needed to ask any questions or required any help with the tasks I had been set. My co-workers were also very helpful and insightful into what it was like to work at BASF, and I got along with them all very well. The hardest part of the job for me was understanding some of the tasks I had been set as at the time I had no legal knowledge or understanding but if I ever had a query my boss was always willing to help me. Daarna ga ik richting het lab. Daar krijg ik te horen (van diegene die het werk verdeelt) wat ik voor analyses moet uitvoeren voor vandaag en op wat voor product. Dit zijn katalysatoren monsters (tussenproducten en/of eindproducten). Hierop voer ik nat-chemische analyses en werk met apparaten, zoals ICP, AAS en XRF. Rond 10 uur is een kleine koffiepauze en rond 12:30 luchen we. Nadat ik analyses heb uitgevoerd voer ik de resultaten in in het systeem en geef dat door aan de fabriek als er dingen buiten spec zijn. Indien er wat analyses buiten spec zijn bespreek ik met de fabriek wat er nog moet worden gedaan met dat monster. Om 16:00 is het weer tijd om naar huis te gaan. Ik heb hier geleerd om deze apparaten te gebruiken en hoe deze te onderhouden (schoonmaken enz.). Ook mocht ik als er tijd over is meelopen met andere collega's om andere analyses te leren waarop ik nog niet was ingewerkt en stagiaires inwerken op bepaalde analyses. De directie en collega's zijn aardig en er heerst een warme sfeer. Het leuke is dat je hier iedere dag wat van elkaar leert, we elkaar helpen als iemand in tijdnood komt, er is ruimte om tijdens meetings je mening te geven hoe je bepaalde handelingen op het lab kan verbeteren en na werktijd doen we met de collega's ook leuke dingen (bijv. kookworkshop Caribisch koken).

In June they went to a 4 day on 4 day off rotating days to nights and it sucks. The checks are shorter the way the pay period falls and just the rotating days and nights sucks. They need to go back to 12 hour swing shifts working on days or nights. It's made it very difficult for me to get my child to in from school when I'm on days. May have to quit soon.
