Mortgage Consultant | Moline, IL | Dec 11, 2014
BNC National Bank provided us with nice office and good products that we could offer our clients.
There were no typical work days in the Mortgage business. Each day was different and you need to be able to perform the tasks of the day. Some of the duties with my position are any of the items listed below: • Work with home buyers providing with the education, answers, and finances to purchase their new home • Provided all Loan Programs: Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, IL & IA Bond Programs • Train all of the new realtors in Mortgage Financing for the QC Realtor Association • Attended XINNEX Mortgage Academy of Excellence – 400 hours of training (While at Cherry Creek). Since this was very similar to previous job positions, I had already been trained and prepared for my "typical" day at work. However when you work with Mortgage loans you continue to learn everyday. Each day was different and that make the job interesting. The normal day for me would consist any of the above items. The most enjoyable part of this job was assisting home buyers achieve their goals and working with them to make sure that buying there new home was as smooth as possible.
ProsEnjoyed the work
ConsOur branch was not meeting our production goals, I was unaware until after I started, It is of grave concern now.

Amazing internship for a future HR professional
Despite my short internship of four months, my experience at NBOC was one of the most beneficial to me and the future of my career. I was assigned tasks and given guidance while at the same time allowed autonomy in my approach. It meant so much to me that an intern could be trusted to generate ideas and come up with my own solutions. By far, my favorite assignment was to redesign their attendance tracking method. I was able to play around with Excel and use my own discretion to create a functional attendance tracking record that the company would end up using even after I was gone. I was able to support NBOC in the on-boarding process for a few new hires and I took what I learned from that experience with me to my current job as an HR Assistant at Western Connecticut State University. I was able to learn about compliance laws, common HR forms, archiving, and more. Management was always there to answer my questions and they weren't afraid to trust me with important assignments. My co-workers were extremely helpful and welcoming, which was an ongoing theme in the company culture. My internship in the summer of 2013 was so amazing that I went back for the summer of 2014 as well.

Senior Loan Consultant | Overland Park, KS | Jul 6, 2013
BNC
We are 100 % commission, with a recoverable draw after the first 30 days. Our compensation was based on our total closed loan volume for the month, with quarterly bonuses. Since our Overland Park division was a brand new office in the Kansas City area, we had to adjust to the operations turn times, based on capacity and volume. I managed the loan process, from point of sale to closing. I enjoyed being able to assist my clients in finding the right loan program that met their specific financial needs. This would include informing each customer of the benefits the government insured VA loans provided and reviewed the current qualifications for obtaining a VA mortgage.
ProsStreamlined Operational System
ConsCommon growing pains of a new branch and ovrenight increased volume

Personal Banker | Stanley, ND | Jan 7, 2013
Fast paced growing business environment with constant customer service and organization skills.
BNC National Bank in Stanley, North Dakota is currently growing everyday because of the large oil boom that is expanding in the area. We retained customer privacy while effectively handling high-dollar transactions daily. I maintained large amounts of work in a high pressure environment, which taught me to work fast and accurately. This position was very busy, but very enjoyable. The most challenging part was the management was very unorganized.
Prosseeing satifcation in our loyal clients
Consrarely had breaks during a full work day

Productive and Fun workplace, with breakfast for all every Friday.
Work was productive and fun; with breakfast for all every Friday, and movie tickets at half the price. I learned to work as a team, and think out of the box, especially working with many different people with different background made it just as fun to work with. The most enjoyable part of the job was working with my team to meet deadlines, the hardest part of the job was saying goodbye, because all of operations was outsource to Canada.
ProsAllow to go to gym during lunch brake.
ConsMy job ended.

Gossip, lies and cliques
My manager was a man-child who had to be told what to do, would throw temper tantrums when he did not get his way, lies to all employees, uses his corporate credit card for personal expenses and is cheating on his wife. Many employees dress like they're ready for bed or the gym. The gossip runs rampant; nobody feels like they have job security and the first 2 months I worked there, 5 employees left without notice. They offer great coffee and occasionally bring in lunch for the office.
Prosfree lunch once a month
Consmicromanaging, gossip, low morale

Lots of freedom but little support
Office is geographically far from BNC hub (Phoenix, AZ), and thus we did not receive much support from the company. Processing was not efficient, and there was little marketing support since we were the branch farthest from the home office.
Prosfreedom of hours and time
Consvery little support from management, home office.

Flexible work environment with room for advancement
The perfect part time job for a stay at home Mom. Worked 20 hours per week, and management was incredibly flexible and understanding with my schedule. A very progressive bank with excellent ideas and vision. I loved working in the fast paced branch environment.

Great place to work!
I've been with National Bank for a little less than 2 years and it's been a great experience. Employees and management are friendly, professional, and easy to work with. It feels like a family and for the most part people are welcoming and happy to help out if you need anything (it might sounds like a cliché but sometimes clichés can be true :) The bank has gone through some big changes since I've started so being able to adapt and be agile is a must. It can be a turn off for some, but I see it as the company adapting to the market, being proactive and innovative. I also like a dynamic work place so I fit right in. When the pandemic started the Bank was quick to act and instore safety measures and benefits for employees (PPE distribution, added wellness days, bonuses for presence required at work during the height of the pandemic, increased perks etc.). This gives you a good idea of how the company responds to a crisis and how it takes care of its employees. The Bank's top leaders also do a good job in communicating with all employees via conference calls on a regular basis, anyone can submit a question. They are actively seeking feedback whether it's positive or not. It decreases the distance between you and the CEO and reassures you that at any level, we are all working towards a common goal. I highly recommend National Bank as an employer and I plan to stay here long term.
ProsExcellent work environment, corporate culture with great values
ConsIt can feel like there's a bit less support from head office when working outside QC

Poor, Poor Management & Training
I was employed with the National Bank for a few months as a bank teller. I received a full week of computer training (reading through the banks PI's and security procedures) and probably 4 days max. of hands on training alongside another employee. Then, thrown onto the floor with my own cash and told "good luck!". The National Bank's computer system is so,so incredibly outdated - absolutely everything needs to be typed in by hand including certain screens you wish to access - you have to type in the screen name. (Complete waste of time!) The staff was far from helpful, huffing and puffing anytime I had to ask a question or need assistance. The Customer Service Manager rolled her eyes at me on several occasions for doing things incorrectly during my first couple of weeks. The Senior Customer Service Representative was so incredibly unpleasant to deal with every single day of work. The Branch Manager hardly ever spoke to the staff or acknowledged us, there were only about 9 employees. I decided to resign because the environment was so poor & the minimal to zero training made going to work an awful experience.
ProsNo weekends ; No nights ; Hour long lunch
ConsNo hours ; Minimal staff ; Ignorant Management ; Ancient computer systems ; ALMOST NO TRAINING

Great place to start your career on an entry-level
I stayed here way too long. I already have 10 years of experience in banking and I am still being taken for granted. The only problem about the National Bank of Canada is their inability to compensate their younger professionals. The baby boomers will retire eventually, sooner or later, and the place will be for us. But they are far behind compared to other financial institutions in terms of salary. My similar position pays 60-70k (without bonus) in another company, whereas I am being paid much lower. With 10 years of experience, and 4-5 years in an Analyst/Management role, I should not be this vastly underpaid. As explained up-top, it is a great place to start your career, but you should apply elsewhere when your manager gives many excuses of why you can't get a raise. My raise never matched inflation, and it is harder every year to keep up with my basic needs such as groceries, bills, mortgage, and car payments. I do not splurge on non-necessary goods and services, and my family and I (2 kids, my husband, and myself) have not been able to afford international flights. Our 3 weeks of vacation is used for home improvement or local road trips only. It is very sad as I am wasting my youth not travelling.

A stable place to work in an unstable field of work.
A typical day at work revolves around the phone and email. As a virtual branch, all our communication with other consultants and clients is done this way. My team takes an average of 700 to 800 calls a week during regular months, and 1200 to 1500 calls during RRSP season. I've learned a great deal about financing, loans and line of credit and the interaction of transactions within banking. Its possible to learn something new everyday as the rules of banking are constantly changing. My coworkers are all very pleasant and hard working and the management is the same. The hardest part about working here is constantly adapting to the new and creative problems our clients present us on a daily basis. The most rewarding part of the job is right after you've solved a serious issue and are recognized for it.
Proslots of benefits, decent pay
Conspeople that call you up sometimes forget that you are also an individual and deserve respect.
