Personnel and the Safety are Paramount
Having worked for Babacock International for 8+ years, I have been provided with multiple opportunities to gtrow, train and become a valued and integral part of the Babcock team. The companies approach to safety and security is second to none, and I value all that they do to forge new working alliances, best practice, business improvements and also providinga means to support personal developement or moves within the company sector environments. I would gladly welcome an opportunity to work for this company once again within the Compliance & Assurance or IT Security Officers role, as the flexibility, support and company ethos, provides a catalist to perform with increased self worth and passion. If you have an opportunity to join Babcock either within the various sectors, jump at the chance as you cannot, in my opinion work for anyone else, once you have benefitted from what they stand for, offer and maintain. The hardest part of the job was to leave and the most enjoyable part was to feel valued, worthy of praise and to be part of a collabrotive team.

Fast-paced with tight project deadlines
Babcock Canada is a newer company that allows for a decent amount of employee input and direction while it works to catch up with the global corporate requirements. The procurement business within the global organization is award-winning, and this is no small accomplishment. It was a privilege to be a part of that. To maintain a high level of recognition and support for the global business, as well the project timelines, the role of Senior Buyer is demanding and requires a higher-than-normal organizational talent. Stakeholder relationship management and clear, strong communication skills are a cornerstone of the success of each project. Babcock Canada can provide a learning curve like no other within the procurement business unit. It's not for the faint of heart and is rewarding for those who choose it.
ProsDecent benefits package and tremendous flexibility.
ConsCan appear to focus too much on external corporate demands in the UK, the local culture tends to be overlooked.

Great Company - Very family Oriented
I was a Secretary at Babcock, the builder. Home buyers would come in, usually to pick colors of their future home, pick cabinets, bathrooms, etc. and I would help with that. I would answer my boss's line, helping the sales people with whatever their needs were, whether it was scheduling a meeting with the boss, or to ask the boss something or other for them... The company was very family oriented and it being the first job that I held down here in Miami, felt very relaxed and comfortable there. The hardest part jf the job was getting there because they were located in Coral Gables and I was a brand new driver...so I had a little fear of the traffic (that's no more) The most enjoyable part of the job was every Friday the management team would have little get togethers in the lunch room and bring food in to celebrate the sales of that week, and the employees would get a chance to bond an get to know each other, better

Adequate working environment but lacks culture and morale
Companies outsource contracts to Babcock International. Babcock then come in and stamp the company logo on everything whilst managing from a distance. There is little investment in the manpower and there is a sense that everything is done on a shoestring budget in order to make money. HR is awful as it is Such a huge company with too many fingers in too many pies. You are working for a large organisation at the end of the day and there is little interaction with management unless something is going wrong. Morale is an issue due to these stated factors.
ProsWill give training for things that benefit the contract
ConsNo feeling of belonging. Large faceless corporation.

Engineer | Babcock, WI | Feb 8, 2016
Rail Division poorly managed, with constant change.
Babcock Rail is the least innovative major rail contractor in the UK. The design arm of the business consists of an unmotivated team of fairly junior engineers, with Senior Designers having no experience in major Civils projects. There is no people development and no path for progression. Salaries are low, and the bonus payment can be held back for no reason. If you are trying to develop a genuine career in Civils Design then Rail is not the place for you.
ConsJob satisfaction at a minimum

Have a meeting before work to make sure everyone is on the same page. Learned there may be more than one way to complete a job. Superiors are very helpful and answers your questions. Fellow workers are easy to get along with. The difficult part of the job is learning new ways to set up equipment and trying to complete the job the way the Utility wants it done.

Assisting consumers with mental and physical disabilities. Cultural based and team-oriented environment. Most enjoyable is the interaction with consumers and watching the positive change in their lives.

Challenging, yet exciting.
I spent two years as Transport manager for Babcock International working with the Telecomms sector. I was responsible for between 10 and 35 drivers and they were tasked with delivering to up to 100 sites across the UK on a daily basis. This involved climbing and working at height as well as heavy lift work and use of many types of Manual Handling equipment. Clients such as Vodafone, Nokia Siemans Networks, Eriksson and Huawei would demand deliveries to site, on time and in full and myself as the Transport Manger always had safety in mind with such a diverse and dangerous working environment being prominant for my staff. When I left Babcock in February due to redundancy, the management team had created a workforce that were skilled, efficient and also an atmosphere that everyone enjoyed working in. Close relationships were built and warehouse staff and management were treated alike. I worked particularly closely with the Warehouse manager to ensure all goods were avaialble, picked and packed in a timely and efficient manner and also the Inventory manager who would be a great help when trying to locate and manage stock going in and out of the depot, along with the Director of Supply Chain we built up a very strong working relationship and this shone through in the work that we carried out. The hardest part of my job was managing to fulfil and exceed the expectations of the client and build up a rapport with our engineering staff out on site. With up to 100 sites and somet

Babcock International Group (MoD Business Unit)
I have spent 17.5 years as the Workshop Manager and the last six months as the site Quality Assurance Manager. Babcock took over the contract from Vosper Thornycroft in October 2010. It has been an interesting 18 years having been involved in many aspects of the business including Business Development for UK and Overseas contracts, budgetary/financial projects (also for the MoD Client), creating and influencing KPI's and listented to. You become a valued member of the management team if you make the effort. Babcock ensure that leadership and H&S skills are topped up regularly, as a Level 4 Risk environment the Workshop receives a monthly Senior Management Team safety inspection, four of those inspections will be Divisional/Executive managers. Working with an almost 50/50 split of ex military/civilian staff was a great education. The training of the civilian staff was a difficult process but I implemented an apprenticeship scheme using a local college (we won three apprentice of the year awards 2010, 11 and 12) and now we have an excellent cross set of shopfloor skillsets. Didn't find the job hard as long as you stayed proactive. If I had to pick one thing it would be the six monthly appraisal/PDR reporting for 32 staff. Recently I have been modifying, updating and creating Quality System Management process aligned to ISO9000/2008 standard. My very good MS Excel and Visio skills and good MS Word skills made the transition into the work easy.
ProsGreat pension and benefits
ConsNone of note

Productive but also quite safety aware
Working with ammunition it is not a normal kind of job as you can appreciate, there's a safety awareness element. The job itself runs under the electronic calendar. Organising the issue of ammunition on daily bases, making sure all requests have been authorised and security forms attached to it including safety data sheets. The ammunition is checked every Thursday via a system called Oracle and once done, stocktake is printed out to be rechecked by a Duty Manager. A month in arrears all ammunition course requests are checked and ammunition is counted per item and matched with what's in stock to assess the need to be restocked via an Ammunition Depot. we called it external demand. This involves transport booking and military escort requirement. The hardest part it is the external demand of ammunition as it is quite detailed and it needs as much accurate as possible. Very tiring to the eye. Part of my job is the responsibility of Catering Services account. Although I am not the camp 'Local Purchase Officer' since 2012 the Site Ops Officer made me responsible of this account due to the large amount of services they provide. And sometimes still fill the gap by solving any other issues requested by Management. Local Purchase is a part of my job that I most and absolutely loved, but due to the company restructure they decided to obsolete all single posts.
Pros30 days annual leave + 8 B/H + sick benefit

Archaic upper management holding back progress
Babcock as a general day to day job is an ok place to work and the team I work with is made up of some great team players. However... Most teams are massively silo'd more than any other company I have known, I've never known a server group so split up and unwilling to work together. This expands past that to other teams such as Networks who literally couldn't be more obstructive when it comes to service delivery. Sadly the higher management have no interest in rewarding loyal employees and would much rather employee new people at higher salaries which leaves a bad taste in the mouth of those who've been loyal and have gathered a massive amount of key knowledge it would take newcomers years to gain. I would like to add I've not suffered this as I've only been here a year but seen it happen to many who've been here 5 years or more. I don't see Babcock lasting far past the next decade if they continue to operate like it's still 1990. They need to start valuing the loyal employees and respecting the deep knowledge they hold of the environment. The ethos here is deliver the projects cheap and then spend twice the original amount botching it up afterwards. Needless to say I'm already looking elsewhere. I wouldn't recommend a job in the IT departments here unless you're really strapped for cash...
ProsNice Campus, some good people
ConsPoor Project management, archaic upper management holding back progress.

Satisfaction can be variable depending on Sector, role, location and management
Babcock is a huge company with 4 main pillars, under those are multiple large contracts, within that there is scope to move and advance - but may have to relocate out of the contract/sector/location you are in. In some contracts there can be a very 'old school' mentality and approach which HR and some managers are working to try to get rid of the old ways. Some employees have very long service and are set in their ways, are negative about everything and can impact on their team with a moany attitude and laziness - it seems they are just waiting to retire and get their company pension and want to make everyone else miserable until they leave (as to them 'it's not what it used to be' - they don't realise the world and workplaces have had to change in the last 30 years!). For some there is a 'that's not my job/in my job description' mentality, rather than pulling together. In contrast I have seen some senior managers also clean, sort out flooded toilets, paint walls etc as they wanted them usable for their staff. The majority of those i directly worked with were great - friendly and helpful. HR are friendly and helpful, but are very busy, covering many contracts and sites, and there is not enough of them to cover everywhere they need to.
Proslarge company so opportunity to advance
ConsCo. is so huge sometimes you can be 'a number'. Salary at market rate but other Benefits not great

Not as they seem
Accounts office/HR function now relocating to Portsmouth....17 months after moving from Nottingham to Birmingham. In total will be re-located 6 times!! Management don't care and are happy to make people redundant after asking to seriously consider re-locating to Portsmouth. What happens next year when they feel like moving again. Have made sure you can TUPE over at lower salary than those will be employed at. In general house prices lower in the Midlands so will be out of pocket again. Most of the senior Managers are located in Portsmouth and surrounding areas so seems to be over indulging to make sure it's all moved to them with no real reason other than that. Management are not giving any real information to the staff so people are finding jobs and now leaving so great talent being allowed to go due to no real information being given. All very odd in how it's all been handled and reasons for moving not being given other than being told it is not a cost cutting action. New staff not yet in place and staff expected to work in terrible conditions with not knowing what is going on and no further information being given. A complete waste of shareholders money. Take the job for what it is and don't expect any respect from Management as when it suits will uproot and move away at a moments notice.
ProsGreat people in your team, feeling of belonging
ConsManagement don't care, poor salary, unable to connect with staff

The job is great......however
I love my job and have enjoyed working in a workshop with some good people on the shop floor. the hours are good to work around and a half day on wed or fri is great. The facilities are not great but have worked in worse. Higher management tend to listen to staff when they have issues and will try to assist as much as they can they strive to be as diverse and as open as possible to all, which is good as its not too PC culture. However there is a tendency for some lower level management to hide things under the carpet and keep information from staff. Any accident will result in a investigation like you have murdered someone. Rather than identify the cause they would rather prevent the outcome (PPE first before anything else) Nothing will get fixed as the company line is no money and its down to another contractor to repair. Some departments have an us and them attitude and you can feel the tension between work areas. Work place heating is a constant issue but they do try to solve it....only for it to break again and again. Dont expect to progress anywhere as courses are like rocking horse poo and you may get told to read the manual to know how to fix something you have never touched. Morale is dropping at the same rate as people leaving......rapidly.
ProsUnion on site friendly and helpful, higher management friendly, work hours good
ConsOver-reactive H&S, Sweep thing under the rug, NO career progression

Trying to change to meet new non core works
I only spent 6 months with Babcock but in that time I found that it is a rigidly process driven company which is justified for its Nuclear & Refit works. However for its new business area where it is inwardly diversifying to gain more defence work the hard processes seem to get in the way of actually doing the new works and making a reasonable margin and is far to ponderous. Additionally try as they might it takes a long time to get one head round ALL of the management and business processes. Higher managers are aware of the difficulty but there are many posts and process titles that would be sometimes bypassed for the new types of work so may be viewed as a threat to the status quo and maybe jobs. Notwithstanding all that, they paid a good wage, had good terms & conditions and openly involve the unions in their greater decision making processes. That along with healthy orders for refits and ship & sub maintenence give them a good future prospectus. I enjoyed my short time with the company and it has a fairly good but rustic culture, not for the sensitive. I quickly became frustrated with some of its self defeating processes which I found totally unnecassary for some projects.
ProsGood canteens, recreations, memberships etc. Good H&S
ConsFar too much management by comittee, Many reasons why cant do something, rather than solution to overcome.

Convenient place to work (central to southwestern Ontario). Excellent Engineering firm. Poor management.
The day started at 7:30 AM and ended after 5:00 PM. As an SPE the phone calls & E-mails start right away. There would be a constant stream of urgent issues to attend to immediately. Some die down would occur after 10:30 whereupon I would attend to long term issues (ordering, technical reports, meetings). After 12:30 there would be another rush of urgent issues, usually shop related. The afternoon would be spent resolving issues and setting up meetings regarding the issues as required. Prior to leaving all E-mails would be cleared and at home in the evening I would check if new E-mails had arrived. Besides technical matters, I learned to mange my time efficiently. Management was not sensitive to people issues; how to manage people to achieve the best results without ruining them, how to mange personal conflicts, how to best use people. Management did understand technical issues. However, a deplorable lack of people skills made it a difficult place to work. My co-workers were excellent. Friendly, cooperative. Hardest part of the job was dealing with management. Most enjoyable parts were dealing with co-workers and getting results.
ProsGood personnel. Benefits are above average.
ConsSalaries are below average. No advancement. Management cannot relate to people.
